COMMERCE, Ga. (Pre-Race) - Don Smith, driver of the Texas Harley-Davidson Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, has had what some would consider a fairly successful season so far. Smith has qualified for every race this year; a considerable feat in this ultra competitive class, but to date has won only one round in eliminations. Since the last race in Gainesville, Smith has taken steps the remedy that problem.

On the eve of the running of the 21st Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals, May 3-6 in Atlanta, Ga. Smith and his team have spent three days and logged many hours of testing at the Atlanta Dragway to prepare for this event.

"Since Gainesville we have been doing a lot of testing," said Smith of Keller, Texas. "We went to Atlanta and tested a couple weeks ago, and our results are very encouraging. I feel like we learned a lot about the truck and that racetrack during the days we spent there.

"In this truck class, with these small block motors, you need to be in a rhythm to drive them right. To do that you need to have seat time. You have to make laps to learn how to drive these things. I think part of our problem has been that lack of testing and seat time.

"We have a new Jenkins motor coming for this race. They are telling us that it is 40 horsepower better than what we have now. 40 horsepower is quite a jump from what we have now. When we get the new motor we will try to get everything we can out of it, and hopefully that will show up on the racetrack and get us qualified in the top half of the field.

"If any one can get this truck to run in Atlanta it is Sonny Ray. Sonny and the rest of my crew, Bobby McCullough, and Steve Farr, are pulling everything they can out of this truck week in and week out.

"I have a great team backing me up. Now hopefully with this extra seat time, I can perform better behind the wheel. Maybe good enough to get a win this weekend."
