Troxel hoping to two-time Atlanta
ATLANTA (May 11) -- Superstar drag racer Melanie Troxel will have two chances to win this weekend's 30th annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals as the popular pro takes aim at both the Funny Car and Pro Mod trophies.
Racing at team owner and teammate Roger Burgess' home track, Troxel will try to impress her boss and make a little history in the process should she finish race day on top in either one of her In-N-Out Burger branded entries.
"This is a big, big weekend for R2B2 Racing," said Troxel, one of only 14 racers in history with wins in both Top Fuel and Funny Car. "Roger's business is just down the road in Duluth (Ga.) so we'll have lots of people cheering us on, and we're running Funny Car again, which is super exciting. I can't wait to get started."
Originally slated to run at the eight national events where In-N-Out Burger has restaurants, Burgess decided to add Troxel's Dodge Charger R/T Funny Car to the Atlanta mix as a birthday present to In-N-Out Burger chief Lynsi Martinez, the third-generation leader of the family-run business.
The car will make a special appearance before the event at Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta.
"Everyone on the Funny Car side of the team is so pumped up," Troxel said. "The next race on the schedule was going to be Sonoma (Calif.) in the middle of July so this is a real treat. We've made so much progress and Roger had already added Charlotte and Houston to the original schedule, so running Atlanta will really allow us to stay in rhythm.
"We continue to work around the clock to find another sponsor to pick up the other races and I know the better we do in Atlanta, the more exposure we'll get on ESPN, which will only help our cause."
When not in her Funny Car, Troxel will be racing alongside Burgess and R2B2 pro Ray Commisso in Pro Mod. The Get Screened America Pro Mod Drag Racing Series points leader prior to the last race in St. Louis, Troxel enters this weekend 33 points out of first.
"We stayed after St. Louis and put in two full days of testing," Troxel said. "And I do mean 'full' days. It was midnight on Tuesday before we were satisfied. The great news is we really feel as though we've got a consistently quick racecar on our hands. In fact, all three cars are running strong now so we should be contenders in Atlanta.
"We had tried some things that didn't work the way we had wanted so when we stayed over to test we put the car back to a familiar tune-up we had used in the past that really worked well for us. I can't wait to see how we stack up with everyone else."
