Atlanta, Ga. (May 7) - Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Chevrolet S-10 Pro Stock Truck, entered eliminations at the 20th Annual Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals in the 16th position. It was in the fourth session of qualifying that Whisnant ran a 7.598 / 177.14 mph to place him in the precarious 16th position.

Whisnant met Winston Champion Bob Panella in the first round of eliminations. Even though Whisnant was out on Panella with a .469 light, Panella would eventually run down Whisnant at the top end of the track and defeat Whisnant with a .067 sec. margin of victory. Panella ran a 7.542 / 178.40 to Whisnant 7.648 / 176.53.

"That was a real close race," said Whisnant. "I didn't see him until the very end. I knew that being qualified 16th, that I had to have a very good light on him to beat him. I had the light and was in front of him, but I couldn't hold on to my lead. I am not unhappy. If you have to loose, it should always be close like that.

"I'm not unhappy with how the truck is running. We improved on every round of qualifying, which is encouraging. Our motor program is really coming around. Warren and Kurt told me to be patient. It's hard to be patient when your sitting in the 16th spot. Everything is improving, and I am confident that we are right on the verge of being where we need to be.

"Between now and Chicago we will be working with Kurt (Johnson) on our motor program, and will continue to test as much as we can. We are going back to the shop to do our homework. We will be ready for Chicago."

The next race on the Pro Stock Truck schedule is the Third Annual Prestone Route 66 Nationals in Chicago, Ill. June 1-4.
