Whisnant falls to KJ in Round 1

COMMERCE, Ga. -- Mark Whisnant, driver of the RW Performance Pro Stock Chevrolet Cavalier enters today's eliminations at the 22nd Annual Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals in the eleventh position on the eliminations ladder.

Whisnant's opponent in Round 1 was Kurt Johnson. Whisnant took the advantage on the starting line with a .464 of a second light to Johnson's .498 light. It was tire shake that caused his Cavalier to break loose on the top end giving the win to Johnson. Johnson ran 8.856 / 200.89 mph to Whisnant's 7.352 / 149.17 mph.

"Just qualifying here this weekend feels like a victory for me," said Whisnant. "If you knew how much this team has struggled you would agree.

"Since our first race in Gainesville we have fought this racecar. We were having a hard time pin pointing the problem, and for a while, we seemed to be on a backward slide. We have logged our fair share of hours on the test track in the last couple of months without much success.

"Making this race is big because it gives us a direction to move in. We have good data for last nights run and our run today. That data maps out the direction we will head in testing next week.

"Of course, I wanted to win this round, and all the rest of them. What racer doesn't? It would have been nice for all our family and friends here today, but as I said, for this team just being part of the Southern Nationals is a victory all by its self.

The next race on the 2002 POWERade Drag Racing Series is the 33rd Annual MATCO Tools SuperNationals May 16-19 in Englishtown, NJ.
