Meyer hoping to repeat in Atlanta

COMMERCE, Ga. - In quite contrast to last year, right now, NHRA Federal Mogul Dragster driver Jay Meyer says he is "just racing for fun." Last year at this time, Meyer was locked in a heated battle for the World Championship with the four time defending champ Rick Santos, and ended up the year finishing second nationally. While he is not out of the title hunt yet, a win at this weekend's NHRA Division 2 Federal Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Atlanta Dragway could put him one step closer to gunning for the coveted No. 1 on the side of his wing for 2002.

Meyer feels that the setbacks he has had this year; a horrible crash in February and blower explosion in March; have pretty much put his Freeport, Texas, based team out of contention for the World Championship, or even a divisional championship this year. All championship scenarios aside, Meyer still plans to run as hard as ever, just as he did when he won the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals here in May.

"We might compensate a little for the warmer conditions, but we're not going to change a lot," said Meyer. "The race is at night, so we're thinking the track should tighten up and come around. Normally when we run a divisional race at a national event track, the track is usually pretty good."

The defending Division 4 Champ hopes he can return to the mid 5.4 to 5.5 second performances that brought him the win here in May.

"I don't know if we can get into the low 5.40's or not," stated Meyer. "I think we should be able to run high 5.40's pretty easily, though. Maybe .50's. Who knows what it will do if we step on it. We put some more transmission in it (higher gear ratio) to compensate for the heat. I think it should be about the same, because it was in the low 90's the last time we ran there. Maybe a little warmer, but that will be about it."

Qualifying begins at 5 p.m. Friday night for the Federal Mogul Dragsters, with the final qualifying session scheduled for 9 p.m. Final eliminations will begin Saturday night at 6 p.m. Stay tuned to InsideFMRacing.com for the latest news in the world of Federal Mogul racing.
