COMMERCE, Ga., May 7, 2000 - Doug Herbert's Snap-on Racing Top Fuel dragster has found consistency, now he wants to come up with some lower elapsed times.

Herbert's string of two semifinal round finishes ended Sunday at Atlanta Dragway when he lost to Gary Scelzi in the first round of the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals.

"We're still learning," said Herbert after running 4.740 seconds at 309.77 mph to Scelzi's 4.626 at 317.24 mph. "I hope we can get it figured out before we run out of time (to compete for the championship).

"We continue to make changes. Our crew chief, Larry Frazier, isn't afraid to keep working on it," Herbert continued. "We are making little changes so we don't get lost."

Herbert's consistency included qualifying runs of 4.741 and 4.726 seconds (which put him 10th going into eliminations). Then came the 4.740 in the first round. "We need to find a tenth (of a second) in performance to be solid contenders," he added.

Herbert slipped a spot to eighth, with 329 points, but he's only three points out of seventh and 65 points away from sixth.

Jim Bailey, driving Herbert's IHRA Snap-on dragster, qualified for his third straight NHRA contest, 4.847 at 296.50, but saved his best for the first round, running 4.785 at 302.69. However, Joe Amato posted a 4.637 at 313.51 to get the win.

"That was a good run for Bailey's team," said Herbert. "We accomplished what we wanted by having him improve his performances."

When Herbert returns to action at the NHRA Spring SuperNationals, May 19-21, it's the first of three straight NHRA races. Events in Dallas and Chicago follow. Bailey resumes IHRA competition June 1-4.
