For Century 21 Pro Stock Firebird pilot Tom Martino, the final two qualifying sessions for the Advance Auto Parts NHRA Southern Nationals were the complete opposite of his opening attempts. After struggling to get a handle on the Atlanta Dragway surface on Friday, Martino came back with two of the quickest passes in the class on Saturday, securing his spot in Sunday's final eliminations. This solid performance was capped off on his last run, when in the heat of the day, he posted an elapsed time of 6.945 seconds, second quickest in the session, and good enough for the 5th spot on the eliminations ladder. This set the stage for a first-round encounter with Jamie Yates, the first time the two will meet in competition. "We changed the car 175% from the way we ran it on Friday. We changed the clutch, the four-link, the weight, the tires and the gear ratios. We went out there this morning and made a pretty decent run at 6.96. We came back and changed the ratios around again for this afternoon and went 6.94, which was all I could probably get out of it on that run.

"Obviously, we're thrilled. It's important to qualify in the top half of the field, because we were able to get lane choice on a track where there is a significant difference between the two sides. We face Jamie Yates in the first round, and I know his father will do an excellent job of setting the car up. Jamie's not one of the guys you want to have in the bad lane, because you know he's going to make a good run. But we're planning to make sure the Century 21 Firebird makes a strong run of its own."
