Commerce, GA - For the first time in three NHRA Pro Modified exhibition events this season, second-year sensation Alan Pittman finds himself on the outside looking in after day one of qualifying. In fact, it's the first time he hasn't emerged from the first day as number one qualifier, a standing he successfully carried into the elimination rounds at both Gainesville and Bristol. At the present time, after two aborted runs, he holds down the number 16 spot.

Tire shake, which knocked him out of contention last weekend in Tennessee, continued to thwart Pittman's efforts to get his supercharged Westbrook Motorsports '41 Willys down the track cleanly. That, combined with the prevailing hot and humid conditions, which favor the nitrous-injected cars, makes Saturday's two remaining sessions vitally important for the South Carolina-based chassis builder.

As the sun went down over the Advance Auto Parts Southern Nationals on Friday, a restful night's sleep was not in the books for members of the Westbrook team. Rather, a session of clutch and engine tuning will likely go on long into the night. This group has tasted life at the top, and they plan to give it their best shot on day two. After all, right now, they know they have no way to go but up, and that suits them just fine.
