Antron Brown Loses In Quarterfinals Of NHRA Supernationals
– Antron Brown, who handles the controls of the Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster, dropped a quarterfinal-round race to Larry Dixon here Sunday in the NHRA SuperNationals at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park.
After handling David Grubnic in the opening round of final eliminations with a 3.833-second pass at 321.27 miles per hour, Brown smoked the tires in round two as Dixon, who is the defending world champion, raced on by with a 3.833-second run at 320.28 mph.
“That’s the way drag racing is right there,” said Brown, a New Jersey native. “I would have loved to have won in my home state here today, but I guess it wasn’t in the cards.
“Against Dixon, we were trying to run similar to what we did in the first round, but the tires wouldn’t stick. We’ll just have to pick our heads up and go on. We’ll have to find a way to win the next two races.”
A two-time winner this season, Brown will now focus on trips to Bristol (Tenn.) Dragway (June 17-19) and Summit Racing Equipment Motorsports Park in Norwalk, Ohio (June 23-26), respectively.
“That’s all you can do,” said Brown, who retained fifth-place in the NHRA 2011 Top Fuel standings. “We can’t dwell on this result. It’s over and nothing is going to change. We have to stay positive and look for ways to improve as we get closer to the Countdown to 1.”
Including the Bristol and Norwalk tour stops, eight races remain before the NHRA’s playoffs begin. Points are then reset for the top 10 in the standings.
“We want to be challenging for that top spot by the time those last six races come around,” added Brown.
Del Worsham leads the points race, followed by Don Schumacher Racing teammate Spencer Massey, Dixon and DSR teammate Tony Schumacher.
