ANTRON BROWN QUALIFIES SEVENTH FOR NHRA SOUTHERN NATIONALS
COMMERCE, Ga., – Antron Brown directed his Matco Tools Top Fuel dragster into the seventh starting position here Saturday during final qualifying for the 31st annual NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta Dragway.
Brown used his best Friday pass of 3.906-seconds at 313.15 mph to secure a top-half-of-the-field slot and thus set up a confrontation with 10th-place qualifier David Grubnic in the first round of final eliminations on Sunday beginning at 11 a.m. ET.
“Qualifying is over and tomorrow is a new day,” said the New Jersey native. “We will race it like we race every Sunday. We’ll put our head down in our lane and get after it.”
Brown will be hoping Atlanta Dragway once again extends a kind hand. He has three wins to his credit at the famed facility – two in Pro Stock Motorcycles (2001, 2006) and one in Top Fuel (2008).
“This track has always been good (to me),” he offered. “But, it is tricky. With the changing weather conditions that seemingly occur here each year, you really have to keep up with what the track is giving you. I’m sure my co-crew chiefs, Brian (Corradi) and Mark (Oswald), will do a good job with that.”
Brown, who entered the race weekend holding third-place in the standings behind Del Worsham and Larry Dixon, respectively, is seeking his second win of the year.
“The Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster is performing well right now,” he said. “We just need to establish some consistency and we’ll be all set.”
