Scott Lynch is bidding to become the first rookie since 1996 to win the series championship and he took a big step in that direction when he won the Subway 150 at Phoenix International Raceway in Phoenix, Ariz.

In the race, Lynch set a record by averaging 114.262 mph around the one-mile oval. He also won the Bud Pole Award with a speed of 126.000 mph in qualifying. Lynch has been the top-finishing rookie in 10 of 11 races this season.

Lynch now leads Steve Portenga by 23 points with two races left in the 2003 schedule.

Portenga finished second in the race, only 1.051 seconds behind the winner. Mike Duncan finished third, Kevin Richards was fourth and Jim Inglebright came in fifth.
