NASCAR legend to compete in The Orleans 222 at LVMS.

LAS VEGAS-- NASCAR legend Hershel McGriff is among the entries for The Orleans 222 NASCAR Winston West race at the Bullring at Las Vegas Motor Speedway Saturday.

McGriff was named in 1998 as one of NASCAR's 50 greatest drivers. His credentials include being Winston West's winningest active competitor with 34 victories, the winningest Bud Pole active competitor with 35 awards and the 1986 NASCAR Winston West Series champion.

Last season at the NAPA 300 at the Bullring, McGriff finished 18th after an incident that sent the No. 04 MBNA Chevrolet to the pits for 50 laps to make repairs.

For the 2002 season McGriff pilots the No. 04 Park Corporation Chevrolet. The legend looks for a top-five finish in his 235th NASCAR Winston West race.

"Hopefully we'll be able to get through it this year," McGriff said. "I have a good car and my old crew chief, my son (Hershel McGriff Jr.). We've run together for years.

"Hopefully my expertise, what I've learned over the years, will help me get the checkered flag. I need to win a race."

The Orleans 222 is scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. with a driver autograph session at 6 p.m. behind the main grandstands.

In addition to the NASCAR Winston West Series, local drivers in the NASCAR Outlaw Stocks, NASCAR Chargers and Thunder Roadsters will compete. The Mechanix Wear Speed Trucks also will be on hand.

Spectator gates open at 4 p.m. General admission is $19 for adults and $15 for senior citizens/ military personnel/children 6-12. Children five and under are free.
