Jefferson Eager for Infineon Challenge
NACHES, WASH. (June 17, 2008) Jeff Jefferson, driver of the MJ2 Racing Chevrolet, hopes to stop a three race skid that has seen him drop from third to tenth in the point standings. Although he has never competed at Infineon Raceway, located outside Sonoma, Calif., he has tasted victory on a road course when he out ran a 44-car field at Pacific Raceways (Seattle) in NASCAR NW Tour competition in 2003.
The Bennett Lane Winery "200" marks the halfway point of the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Series season where Jefferson and his MJ2 Racing team have several goals still to be accomplished. "To tell you the truth, we are a bit disappointed in our performance so far this year," Jefferson said. "For a new team though, I know we are on the right track and the race this weekend will be a big milestone in our development. I really like road racing because the race is truly in the driver's hands."
Jefferson will indeed have his hands full as several road racing experts and a couple of NASCAR Sprint cup competitors will join the stout field of series regulars for the 64-lap race on Saturday afternoon.
"You just have to race the racetrack," Jefferson said. "If you get caught up racing the others guys every lap then you are probably going to be in trouble. If we can finish all 64 laps then we are going to have a great finish. There is no real secret here. Just keep all four tires on the asphalt all race and be smooth with shifting and we'll be fine."
Jefferson and his team tested at Infineon June 10th and felt real happy with the car. "We ran in the low 119's on old tires and the car felt great," Jefferson stated. "The fast guys were in the mid 118's so we feel real good about our chances on Saturday. Mike Warn (MJ2 Racing owner) has put together a first class team and we are focused on getting back in this championship fight."
Infineon Raceway could well be the catalyst for a championship run as a top finish will move a driver up the point standings and a bad day will put a driver deeper in the hole. "This race is critical to our season," Jefferson said. "Anything can happen on a road course and we just hope it doesn't happen to us."
Jefferson drives a team car to Jim Warn and is sponsored by MJ2 Racing, Gran Prix Imports, and Leupold Optic. The car is powered by a Chevrolet NASCAR Spec Engine and sits atop a Hopkins chassis. Jefferson has 29 career NCWS starts with one win, 8 top five and 14 top ten finishes along with two Coors Light Pole Awards. Jefferson is currently tenth in the NCWS standings after five races with one top five and two top ten finishes.
The Bennett Lane Winery "200" at Infineon Raceway is round six of the 13-race NASCAR Camping World Series-West schedule for 2008. The race will be televised live on HDNet with the green flag slated for 12:30 pm (PDT). SPEED Channel will have an enhanced reply of the race on July 8 at 1:00 pm (ET). 2008 is the 55th year of competition for the NASCAR Camping World Series-West.
