Gomez gains valuable experience at Madera; prepares for Phoenix this Thursday

North Highlands, Calif. -- Jonathon Gomez and the RTD Motorsports, Inc. team placed ninth in Saturday's Hotwood 111 event for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Seires Western Late Models at Madera Speedway in Madera, Calif.

The event on the asphalt one-third mile was a good opportunity for Gomez to gain laps in preparation for his NASCAR Camping World Series West event there on April 25.

Gomez qualified 11th in the field that featured track champions from every NASCAR- sanctioned track in the central valley.

Gomez held his own in the incredibly stout field to finish just one lap down in the 111 lap grind.

Now the 26 year-old Drive for Diversity driver from Magic Valley, ID will switch gears in heading to Phoenix International Raceway this Thursday, for the "Jimmie Johnston Foundation 150" on the one-mile oval in Arizona. The event will mark the third race of the season for the 2009 NASCAR Camping World Series West.

Gomez has finishes of eighth and twelfth so far in his rookie campaign in the series. This will be his first start on the incredibly fast Phoenix track, and the event will be part of the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series weekend there.

For the first time this season, the RTD Motorsports crew led by Craig Raudman will be responsible for full pit stops. Gomez should be strong on pit road with the crew that Rob Dixon's team has put together for him.

The 150 mile event is one of the longest on the calendar and will be a test of patience for the field of almost over 30 cars expected to start.
