Jefferson Chasing Top Ten at Altamont
NACHES, WASH. (September 11, 2008) Jeff Jefferson, driver of the MJ2 Racing Chevrolet, has had a lot of time to think about his season. Most of the thoughts turn to what could have been as the three-time NASCAR champion has seen good runs go bad all season. This Saturday night at Altamont Raceway Park he hopes to turn around a season of disappointment by taming the fast half-mile paved oval in the golden State Steel & Stair "200".
"I don't think when we started out the year what thought it would go quite like this," Jefferson said. "This MJ2 Racing team is something pretty special with a lot of very dedicated and committed folks and we hope for a much better result this weekend."
Jefferson has experienced more DNF's this season than in the last seven years combined but there have been some bright spots. "We actually run pretty solid all season but seem to find the bad luck late in the race when we have been running in the top ten," Jefferson said. "I am really excited about the race this weekend. I like the longer races and I really like the half-miles, so I expect to have a good car and be there at the end."
Jefferson's best qualifying effort (2nd) this season came at Evergreen Speedway in July and has only posted three top ten qualifying spots this season. "We have worked on our shock packages and frontend geometry quite a bit," Jefferson said. "Most of the races this season our impound events so the real race seems to be qualifying. The guys winning all season are stating up front."
"The team has been working extremely hard in the shop ensuring our car is good right out of the trailer," Jefferson said. "With a big field of cars expected for this race and a lot of new faces we are going to have to be on our game. Altamont is one of those tracks that everybody is going to be wide open."
Jefferson drives a team car to Jim Warn and is sponsored by MJ2 Racing, Gran Prix Imports, and Leupold Optic. The car is powered by a Chevrolet NASCAR Spec Engine and sits atop a Hopkins chassis. Jefferson has 35 career NCWS starts with one win, 9 top five and 16 top ten finishes along with two Coors Light Pole Awards. Jefferson is currently 11th in the NCWS standings after eleven races with two top five and four top ten finishes.
The Golden State Steel & Stair "200" at Altamont Raceway Park is round twelve of the 13-race NASCAR Camping World Series-West schedule for 2008. ARP is hosting its 16th NCWS race this weekend. Eric Holmes is the track record holder while Butch Gilliland holds the race record for 200 laps set back in 1997. 2008 is the 55th year of competition for the NASCAR Camping World Series-West.
