Southampton Champion gunning for South Boston title.
SOUTH BOSTON, VA (MARCH 19, 2003)-- In 2002, Woody Howard, then a 20-year-old Late Model chauffeur from Chesapeake, Va., won the Southampton Motor Speedway track title. The year previous saw Howard finishing second in Late Model points at Langley Speedway in Hampton, Va. With those accomplishments under his belt, Howard now feels he has what it takes to win at Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway.
"I've raced a full schedule at Langley Speedway in Hampton and Southampton [Motor] Speedway in Capron and like the challenge that South Boston offers me, "Howard said. "It's a challenging track. The officials are friendly, and my goal is to win the track championship at SBS for 2003."
"We expect to have a number of champions from other tracks competing with us this season," commented Speedway General Manager Cathy Rice. "The Burton, Sadler and Grubb brothers, along with Stacy Compton, have proven that, if you can win at South Boston, then you have what it takes to make it to the big leagues. We are thrilled that Woody will be racing with us this season, and wish him and all of our competitors a safe and successful season."
Howard's racing efforts are supported by the United Methodist Church, which uses its position on a successful Late Model Stock team to deliver the church's message to race fans, while presenting racing as an activity in which entire families can become involved.
Howard will join the rest of the 2003 Late Model field Saturday, March 29, in the American Family Homes 300, presented by Sheetz convenience stores. The evening features twin 150-lap Late Model events, with $15,000 on the line if a driver can win both events. The first 150-lap race also awards double points, along with an opportunity for the winner to participate in the 7th annual Carquest Road to Charlotte. The Sheetz NASCAR Limited Sportsman division will compete in twin 50s and the Pure Stock division will race for 30 laps. Additional events that evening include the inaugural "Faster Pastor" competition and children's race for fans age four to seven.
