NASCAR Garage to receive facelift, new grandstands on the way
Watkins Glen, NY (May 3, 2004) - Continuing with a fan-focused initiative that began last year, Watkins Glen International will begin several new upgrades to the historic road course, highlighted by new frontstretch grandstands. Immediately following the final race of the 2004 season, Glen officials will begin tearing down the existing frontstretch grandstands and putting in its place new aluminum grandstand seats that include seatbacks. Ticketholders for the 2004 SIRIUS at The Glen in the frontstretch grandstands will be given first right of refusal on the new seats for the 2005 event, as is customary with each renewal year.
"New grandstands are yet another step in our ongoing plan to renovate and upgrade our facility," said track President Craig Rust. "The commitment of several million dollars to Watkins Glen reinforces International Speedway Corporation's commitment to road racing and The Glen."
In addition to new grandstands, the existing NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series garage will be renovated, answering the calls by teams to double the width of the doors, making entry and exit much easier. A new roof will be added, as well as a new exterior to match the newly-installed gray Sunoco office at the front corner of the garage.
The multi-million dollar enhancements and upgrades also includes Phase Three of the ongoing municipal water and sewer project, which calls for remaining infield areas, including the campgrounds, to be hooked up to the new system. A new restroom has also been added in the Gate One area that will include shower capabilities on the SIRIUS at The Glen NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series weekend.
