NASCAR Rookies At A Glance - A Look at the NASCAR Elite Division, Featherlite Southwest Series Victory Circle Chassis 2003 Rookie-of-the-Year Standings
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (July 24, 2003) - The following is a glance at the NASCAR Elite Division, Featherlite Southwest Series Rookie class of 2003 heading into the Lucas Oil "125" presented by Madera Auto Center at Madera Speedway Saturday, July 26. This will be race 8 of 14 on the NASCAR Featherlite Southwest Series schedule. After the race at Mesa Marin Raceway, JR Patton holds a ten-point lead over Thomas Martin for the Victory Circle Chassis Rookie-of-the-Year Award.
No. 1 - JR Patton
(No. 97 Las Cruces Motorsports Chevrolet), Las Cruces Motorsports.
Last week's ranking: 1st. Patton continues to lengthen his rookie point lead after a strong 6th place effort at Mesa Marin Raceway. Patton is one of three rookie drivers to start all seven Featherlite Southwest Series races in 2003 where he has one top five and three to ten performances. Patton has completed 879 of 927 contested thus far with an average finishing position of 12.6.
No. 2 - Thomas Martin
(No. Sierra Mist Chevrolet), Penney Racing.
Last week's ranking: 2nd. Martin finished 11th at Mesa Marin June 28th and rose to the 16th position in the overall point standings. In seven starts this season, Martin has one top ten finish and has completed 812 of 927 contested.
No. 3 - Frank Deiny Jr.
(No. 70 Star Nursery Chevrolet), Q Motorsports.
Last week's ranking: 3rd. Deiny has not found the success 2003 that propelled him to the South Boston Speedway championship in 2002. Deiny has dropped out of the NASCAR Top 10 point standings after four straight finishes of 20th or lower. Deiny currently sits 17th in the over all standings.
No. 4 - Greg Voigt
(No. 09 Auto Pro Racing Engines Chevrolet), Voigt Racing.
Last week's ranking: 4th. Voigt maintains his fourth place position in the rookie standings after an 18th place finish at Mesa Marin June 28th. Voigt has six starts this season and currently is 19th in the overall standings with one top five and one top ten finish.
No. 5 - Danny Burson
(No. 56 Great Western Electric Chevrolet), Burson Racing.
Last week's ranking: 5th. Burson collected his third top ten finish of the season with a 9th place performance at Mesa Marin June 28th. Burson has completed 676 of 927 laps run this season and has a career best 4th place finish earlier this season at Irwindale Speedway.
No. 6 - Kevin Vernon
(No. 51 Action Towing Chevrolet), Vernon Racing.
Last week's ranking: 6th. Vernon had a disappointing finish of 26th at his home track of Mesa Marin June 28th. Vernon has no top ten finishes in five 2003 starts. Vernon currently sits in the 24th position in the overall point standings.
No. 7 - Nathan Thiesse
(No. 88 Honda Cars of Corona Pontiac), The Body Shop Racing.
Last week's ranking: 7th. Thiesse was the top finishing rookie for the second race in a row at Mesa Marin in only his third start of 2003. Thiesse has found the going a bit rough over the first few races in 2003 but has found his groove in the month of June. Thiesse has one top five and three top ten performances in three starts this season.
No. 8 - Richard Johnson
(No. 47 Auto Glass Authority Chevrolet), Johnson Racing.
Last week's ranking: 10th. Johnson failed to qualify for the race at Mesa Marin June 28th and will be making his first over visit to Madera Speedway this weekend.
No. 9 - Mike Price
(No. 3 AMI Metals Chevrolet), Price Racing.
Last week's ranking: 9. Price did not attend the event at Mesa Marin June 28th.
No. 10 - Chris Hines
(No. 96 Ironeagle Chevrolet) Pro Dyno Racing.
Last Week's ranking: N/A. Hines qualified for his first race of 2003 at Mesa Marin June 28th and finished 16th. Hines has elected to withdraw form the 2003 rookie program and concentrate on building and enhancing his team for a run at the 2004 rookie title.

Victory Circle Chassis' offers a season ending bonus of $5,000 to the top finishing rookie at season ending banquet in December. Each rookie competitor earns rookie points for each race they start. No rookie points are awarded for races a rookie fails to qualify for. Points are awarded on a declining scale with the top finishing rookie receiving 10 points then 9,8.7 and so on. Each rookie will count their best 12 finishes of the 14 race schedule towards the 2003 Rookie-of-the-Year championship.
