Evans wins Featherlite Checker 300

PHOENIX (Oct. 23, 1998) Garrett Evans passed Gary Lewis with three laps remaining to win the Checker Auto Parts 300 for the Featherlite Southwest Series, a part of the NASCAR Touring Division, at Phoenix International Raceway Friday afternoon.

Evans, driving a Ford Thunderbird, won $10,025 while claiming his first career series victory. Evans is a former champion of the Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series, NASCAR Touring.

"We've finished second here three times in the Copper World Classic,'' Evans said. "We figured this track owed us one.''

Lewis, of Bothell, Wash., finished second, narrowly edging Jim Inglebright of Fairfield, Calif., at the finish. Defending Featherlite Southwest Series champion Bryan Germone of Windsor, Calif., was next and Doug McCoun of Prunedale, Calif., finished fifth.

The next race for the Featherlite Southwest Series will be Nov. 7 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.
