Fifth Is Fine For Hard Charging Vidovich At Irwindale

LAKESIDE, CA -- NASCAR ELITE DIVISION, Featherlite Southwest Tour Series point leader, Auggie Vidovich was the one to beat Saturday night at the half-mile paved Irwindale Speedway oval. Vidovich marched thru the field not only once but twice after Vidovich challenged the leader passing on the inside for the lead on lap 117 and was tapped from the side. Quick thinking Vidovich controlled the spin to catch the rest of the pack settling back into 9th with only laps to go. Vidovich was one of six drivers that pulled away from the rest of the field at the start and remained in the lead 6-car pack most of the 150-lap race. With a final yellow on lap 149 involving two competitors in front of Vidovich, Vidovich then moved up from 7th to 5th place to finish the race. "A win would be nice, but we will take the fifth place finish," grinned Vidovich.

Vidovich continues to lead the NASCAR ELITE DIVISION, Featherlite Southwest Tour Series since the second race of the 2003 series, now by 91 points with an average finish of 4th place for the past 5 races. Earlier in the day, Vidovich took his turn to qualify for the King Taco 150 setting his #59 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on the pole with a time of 18.215, only to be bumped down a position by one of the final qualifiers (18.207). The inverted lineup of 6 positioned twenty-two-year-old Vidovich in 5th to start the race with 30 other entries. The initial entry list totaled 48 cars sending 10 cars to the 15-lap non-qualifying race.

The next race for the series, the SNAP-ON TOOLS/JELLY BELLY 200K (62 laps) takes place at the 1.949-mile INFINEON RACEWAY road course located in Sonoma, CA on Saturday, June 21. Along with the NASCAR ELITE DIVISION, Featherlite Southwest Tour Series will be the NASCAR Winston Cup and TRANS-AM Series'.

A handful of road course experts will be on hand, including Vidovich whose resume includes championships in go karts and Rookie of the Year in the 1997 IRRA Toyota All American Stock Car Challenge held at WILLOW SPRINGS INTERNATIONAL RACEWAY, also a road course where Vidovich finished 3rd in the series.

The SNAP-ON TOOLS/JELLY BELLY 200K race will be televised on FOX SPORTS NET June 30 thru July 6.
