VIDOVICH HAS STRONG FINISH AT IRWINDALE WITH ANOTHER TOP FIVE - ON TO INFINEON
LAKESIDE, Calif. (22 June 2005) -- 2003 NASCAR Elite Division, Southwest Series Champion Auggie Vidovich II boasted another strong night of racing under the lights with a fourth at Irwindale Speedway Saturday. Short of a win, Vidovich had one of the more consistent cars of the night.
Qualifying third in a field of 28 entries for race six of the 14 race series, Vidovich started the race in the sixth position after an 8-car invert for the "Advantage Ford 100" race. By lap 20, Vidovich was up to fifth with the No. 11 Centrifugal Technologies, Ultra Custom Boats, Ransom Brothers True Value Lumber Chevrolet working well through the corners.
The past champion's momentum, however, was halted on lap 57 when Vidovich and another car collided in turn two dropping Vidovich back to ninth and Vidovich having to start his march back up to the front. By lap 73, Vidovich was back up to eighth and seventh by lap 76. Keeping his cool all night, Vidovich was up to fifth with 21 cars left in the race then up to fourth before a yellow on lap 97. With a green, white, checkered ending the race, Vidovich was nose-to-tail across the finish line for a fourth place finish for the night and back up to second in the point standings, 36 points out of first.
Vidovich continues to race smooth but aggressive races keeping him in the top three in point standing from race to race. "Mike Harvick had a good setup once again for us," said Vidovich after the race. "The car was consistent and I kept my cool after I tangled with the other car and just starting moving back up. I needed a couple more laps."
Still with the most wins for 2005, Vidovich is now tied with Pettit, the 2004 SW Series Champion, at two wins each. Vidovich has 4 top-5 and four top-10's with an average finish of fifth for the six races so far. The 2003 champion also still leads the stats with the most laps lead for the series at 250.
Vidovich is expecting to do well at Infineon Raceway this coming Saturday, June 25. Finishing 26th last year due to an accident, 11th in 2003, and 38th in 2002 with rear end failure, the 24-year-old Vidovich is looking to his karting and IRRA Toyota All-American Stock Car Series (1997 Rookie-of-the-Year, 3rd in Series -- Willow Springs International Raceway) experience paying off.
The "Blue Lizard Australian Sunscreen 200" takes place on the 1.999-mile paved road course with several NASCAR Cup and Busch drivers like Kyle Busch, Travis Kvapil, Boris Said and Hermie Sadler expected to take on the Southwest regular drivers for bragging rights for this race. Practice for the 64-lap race takes place Friday at 9:00 a.m., time-trial qualifying runs at 1:30 p.m. and the race Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
