Irwindale Speedway, Calif. - - Saturday, April 1 Irwindale Speedway will present "The Golden State Open Wheel Spectacular", the first open wheel event of the 2000 season. That jam-packed night of racing will feature USAC Sprint Cars and Midgets, Supermodified Racing League Supermodifieds, and Irwindale's own NASCAR Super Late Model stock cars, all on the same night's event card.

"This event is going to be something of a one-evening version of the 'Copper World' weekend at PIR," said track VP Bob DeFazio. "We call it a 'spectacular' and it is shaping up to be just that." With four of the most prestigious divisions that compete at Irwindale on track all on the same night, chances are more than favorable for some super-competitive racing on the first Saturday in April.

In the USAC Sprint Cars expect to see Tony Hunt from Fair Oaks, Mike Boat from Phoenix, Wally Pankratz form Orange, Troy Cline from Santa Clarita, and Kevin Kierce from Burbank, among the 30-plus snorting, snarling 360 Sprinters that will take to the track on Saturday night.

And then there's the USAC Midget contingent. These are a lot of the guys who thrilled the fans on Turkey Night, and they'll be back for more of the same on April 1. Downey's Steve Paden, Clayton's Marc De Beaumont, Bakersfield's Brian Stanfill, Riverside's Josh Wise, and Palmdale's Bobby Boone are all expected to be there putting on their patented three and four-wide passing show.

SUPERMODIFIEDS … Just the word seems to make the pavement shake. The fastest cars to turn the Irwindale ½-mile, and (by far) the meanest-looking. These over-powered, totally-twisted monster cars are groomed and shaped for only one thing, and that is going very fast while turning very LEFT.

If the air is cool and the track is warm on Saturday night we could well see a new sub-15 second lap record … The man who holds that record (15.199), Mark Ekberg, of Reedly, California, will be here and he'll be looking to put his lap speed just a little further out of reach. Of course he'll have to contend with the previous Irwindale outright lap record holder Davey Hamilton. "Shoot-Out"? You might say that … More like an aerial dogfight at ground level with these wild winged warriors.

As for the NASCAR Super Late Models, why do you think they call them "Super"? Full-bodied NASCAR stock car door-to-door action with all of the fan's favorites. No one's been left out in this show, this is a not-to-be-missed evening!

Tickets for this event are now on sale. Fans may call the Speedway box office Tuesday through Saturday at (626) 358-1100, go "on line" to order at www.tickets.com, or stop by the track's on site box office located at 13300 E. Live Oak Avenue in Irwindale. (Box office is open 9am- 4pm Tues. - Friday and 12am - 9pm on Sat.)

Irwindale Speedway is located at Live Oak Avenue and the 605 Freeway in the heart of the San Gabriel Valley about 18 miles East of downtown Los Angeles.
