Irwindale, Calif. - - The fastest cars to torture the asphalt at Irwindale are on the schedule for their series season finale at the Speedway for Saturday night, October 21. The only cars to turn the Irwindale half mile in the 15's*, these wildly-offset, winged creatures are the most extreme of all oval track cars in terms of sheer cornering speed and power. More like (very) low-flying aircraft on unbelievably-wide tires, these reptilian rip-roaring roadsters, with their weirdly offset wings, would hardly look out of place in one of those gritty dark-future drama flicks like "Blade Runner" or "Mad Max".
Immensely popular with the fans of big horsepower and brave hands on the steering wheel, the Supermodified Racing League Supermodifieds are more a phenomena than a racing class. (Very) individual racing machines built by (very) individual teams all bent on one singular goal: to convey one driver around an oval race track faster than any other vehicle on the planet ... They'll be doing just that at Irwindale on the 21stat IS.
Adding to the show on Saturday night will be a special big bucks 75-lap feature race for Irwindale's own NASCAR Late Models. The seasonal points chase is over and Goleta's James Weston has taken the crown, but the racing bug still has its teeth firmly implanted in these classy race car chauffeurs.
The NASCAR Super Stocks will be back as well for a 50-lap non-points race that will be just as hotly-contested as any during the year. This Division saw its winner triumphing with fewer outright race wins than either the second or third place annual points finishers and everyone wants "one more" just for the record.
But Wait! There's More! Irwindale's own feisty band of NASCAR Mini-Stocks are also back for their one last crack at the track in 2000. This was a closely-contested class all season long with bellicose boasts backed up by hot on-track action ... There are scores to settle here ... Pride is on the line and the racing will be ... (let's just call it "brisk"). Same note for American Race Trucks, there'll be at least 25 of them out there mixing it up in the main and having a "haul" of a great time doing it!
*Two weeks ago, on an misty Friday night, Davey Hamilton rode his Larry Turgero-built #1 Wynn's Supermodified into the 14's (14.780 seconds) for the first time (for anyone) at Irwindale Speedway. The stunning run, while verified, was not a record (that stands at a blinding 15.154 set by Troy Regier on April 4, 2000). The average speed for Hamilton's run was a startiling122 miles per hour!
