Summerville, SC (July 1,2000) - Cam Strader of Wilson, NC drove the Wesson Cooking Oil Mercury to his sixth top five finish of the season Saturday night at the Summerville Speedway in Summerville, South Carolina.
Strader, who leads the NAPA Filter Rookie of the Year battle, qualified in the eighth starting position, and claimed the Rookie of the Race Award in the event.
It didn't take long for the action to begin. On lap 2, the cars of Angie Wilson, Eric VanCleef, Ricky Woodward, Joey Miller, and Scott Weaver crashed coming off turn two. Strader quickly advanced to the fifth spot at the restart on lap number 9.
On lap 30, another multi-car crash involving the entries of Keith Roggen, Ernest Winslow, and Tommy Ballard slowed the field for five more laps of caution.
By lap 46, Strader had advanced to the fourth spot and battled throughout the remainder of the event with last week's winner, Johnny Chapman. "We had a good set-up under the Wesson car tonight," explained Strader. "It just doesn't take much to abuse the tires here because the track surface is abrasive and this is a fast little race track," he said.
On lap 94, Ricky Woodward spun his Pontiac in turn 2 bringing out the final caution period of the event. Strader made a daring move to the inside of B.J. Mackey on the restart, but couldn't make the pass stick as the two cars entered turn one. "B.J. and I battled really hard there on the last lap, but I just couldn't get by him. It's pretty neat that the two ConAgra cars finished third and fourth tonight. We'll take this top five finish and move on to Greenville-Pickens."
The 100-lap event lasted 36 minutes and 24 seconds, and the average speed was slowed to 65.995mph due to 4 caution periods for 14 laps.
The next event for the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series competitors is this Saturday at the .500-mile Greenville-Pickens Speedway in Greenville, SC for the Expression Unlimited, Incorporated 100-lap event.
