ST. AUGUSTINE, FLA.-St. Augustine Speedway officials announced at 12:30 PM today that all Speedway activities scheduled for this Saturday, August 28 would be canceled due to the impending threat of Hurricane Dennis to the St. Augustine area. "In the interest of public safety and the concern for the citizens of the First Coast area, we feel that the most prudent decision is to cancel this Saturday's events and encourage our fans and race teams to focus on making the necessary preparations for this unpredictable storm," said Louis Smith, Speedway General Manager. 'We hope that everyone will be spared the hardship of dealing with Hurricane Dennis, but with even the remotest chance of putting any of our friends in harm's way, we just have no other choice but to cancel." Saturday's originally scheduled double point event for the Snap-On Sportsman division in conjunction with American Diabetes Association Night at the speedway has been tentatively rescheduled for Saturday, Sept. 11, the same night that NASCAR points end for all divisions. The much anticipated bounty race pitting George Thrift against some of the top modified drivers in the state will be run next Saturday night with the additional $500 at stake for the winner.
