Sophomores Sensational in Slim Jim All Pro Series St. Augustine, FL - April 12, 1997 - For the second event in a row a second year driver found his way to victory lane in a NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series event. Milford, OH's Jeff Fultz was in the right place at the right time to capture the victory in the $46,800 Winn Dixie 200 at St. Augustine Speedway in St. Augustine, FL. Sugar Hill, GA's Steven Christian, piloting his BellSouth Chevrolet led the 36 car field to the green flag by virtue of earning the Busch Pole Award over 42 other competitors during qualifications. Christian steered his Sammy Shumate-prepared machine to a track record 16.983 second lap which equated to 105.98 mph. At the drop of the green Christian raced side by side with outside front row starter Derrick Gilchrist and managed to grab sole possession of the top spot at the completion of lap two. By lap 13 the top runners were about to begin lapping cars at the rear of the field when a grinding crash collected Christian, Gilchrist, Wildwood, FL's Wayne Anderson, and Greenville, SC's Randall Gentry. Gentry was able to continue but Christian's, Anderson's and Gilchrist's Chevrolet's all came away with extensive damage. Gilchrist's Fairfield Inn's-sponsored racer leaked oil all the way around the 0.500 mile oval and a red flag was displayed by starter Rick Monroe to allow track workers to clean up the fluid and debris. The green flag waved once again on lap 27 and points leader Nipper Alsup took control of the event in his Lift Services Wire Rope Specialists Chevrolet, leading until lap 86 when Jefferson, GA's Scott Sutherland showed some early season muscle by moving his Network Construction Chevrolet into the lead. Sutherland maintained the top position until lap 138 when Alsup regained the position, moving low under Sutherland, who attempted a similar move one lap later but settled back into the second position. During the final 50 laps the race exemplified all of the characteristics of a Saturday night shootout as many of the top runners jockeyed and exchanged positions, all trying to

improve their position and ultimately wrestle the lead away from Alsup. Some drivers fared better than others. Zephyhills, FL's David Reutimann, a Port City Racing Rookie of the Year candidate, powered by Sutherland to take over the second position, but was forced to pit to replace a flat tire just a couple of laps later. Fortunately, Reutimann was able to stay on the lead lap as he was able to change the tire during a caution, brought out as a result of a spin by Roxboro, NC's Carl Long. On the restart Ron Young, Sutherland and 1995 Series Champion Hal Goodson made contact with Young and Sutherland being relegated to the rear of the lead lap cars and Goodson moving into the second position to take his shot at Alsup. Goodson tried to make his move on lap 191 but the results were less than successful for both drivers as they tangled, sending Alsup into the outside wall. Alsup managed to gather up his Chevrolet but slipped back to the fourth position. Goodson was the loser in this skirmish as he ended up as the last car on the lead lap, in 13th position. Once this final caution was cleaned up, the race ended in a two lap dash with Fultz holding off Birmingport, AL's Mike Harmon for his second series win. The driver of the King Motorsports Chevrolet now moves into a tie with Alsup for the series points lead. Fultz commented afterward, "It was very difficult to see the cars in front of me during the last half of the event as the hood was bowed way up from an earlier incident. We just kept digging and things fell our way," adding further, "we don't have as much seat time in these types of cars as some of the other guys but we were fortunate to come out on top tonight." Fultz's second series win was worth $8,775. Each of his wins have come during the Series' first visits to new tracks.. His other win came in the first ever NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series event at Caraway Speedway near Asheville, NC last year. The next race for the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series drivers is the Dominos Pizza 200 at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on April 26.
