FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - April 6, 1997
NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series to Visit St. Augustine Speedway for First Time DAYTONA BEACH, FL-Just as the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and Busch Series- Grand National Division christened the Texas Motor Speedway last weekend, the NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series will do the same this weekend at St. Augustine Speedway in St. Augustine, FL. Over 40 NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series drivers have pre-entered the $46,800 Winn-Dixie 200, scheduled for this Saturday. This event will be the first ever NASCAR Touring Series event at the half mile oval which was converted from a dirt track to an asphalt surface over the winter. After starting the season on a 1.5 mile superspeedway, the drivers will now attack a track that has to be considered a "staple" configuration for the series. The track is banked 16 degrees in the corners and six degrees on the straightaways. Based on unofficial test results, the cars should turn laps at just over 100 mph. Huntersville, NC's Nipper Alsup leads the point standings by 10 markers over Hank Parker, Jr., by virtue of picking up his first ever series win in the season opener at Homestead, FL. Shawn Hendricks, who hails from Piedmont, SC leads the Port City Racing Rookie of the Year standings after battling to a fifth place finish in the first points-paying event. On Saturday, Registration and Inspection begins at 10:00 a.m. with Practice being held from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. Time trials get underway at 6:00 p.m. with the green flag waving on the Winn Dixie 200 at approximately 8:00 p.m. The starting field will consist of 32 starters, with up to four additional starting positions available to any of the top 30 eligible drivers in the final 1996 NASCAR Slim Jim All Pro Series Championship point standings, who have entered the event, but have not qualified for one of the original 32 starting positions. -30- FOR FURTHER INFORMATION CONTACT NASCAR PUBLIC RELATIONS AT (770) 486-3591 jn 4/7/97
