Whelen Engineering to Sponsor NASCAR Southern Modified Tour

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 23, 2005) -- Just six months after announcing its title sponsorship of the legendary NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, Whelen Engineering is expanding its involvement with NASCAR's open-wheeled racing division.

Whelen, an emergency signal and lighting manufacturer based in Chester, Conn., has signed a multi-year agreement to become title sponsor of the all-new NASCAR Southern Modified Tour, now known as the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour.

"We haven't even begun racing yet, but we couldn't let this sponsorship opportunity pass us by," said Whelen Motorsports Director Phil Kurze. "In just a few short months, our involvement with the Whelen Modified Tour in the northeast has created excitement and built awareness for the Whelen brand, which we now hope to continue in the southeast."

The Whelen Southern Modified Tour features cars which are nearly identical to the lightweight, open-wheeled cars on the Whelen Modified Tour, with the exception of a different tire compound and a higher compression ratio allowance for some engines. The Whelen Southern Modified Tour begins its inaugural season March 26 at Caraway Speedway in Asheboro, N.C.

"The launch of the all-new Southern Modified Tour is a big step for NASCAR," said NASCAR Director of Regional Racing Development Don Hawk. "Thanks to our tremendous partners at Whelen, the Tour's first year will be an even greater success than we originally imagined. Our teams and drivers are excited to begin the season and equally pleased to carry the Whelen name along for the ride."

For over 50 years, Whelen Engineering has researched, designed and developed warning and signaling devices. Whelen's innovations in LED and Strobe lightbars and lightheads have set the standards for police, fire and rescue, emergency, DOT, as well as maintenance and construction equipment. Whelen has built state-of-the-art aviation lighting since 1952 and its high power voice and siren systems are heard around the globe. Whelen products are designed and manufactured in the U.S.A.

In addition to its sponsorship of NASCAR's two Modified Tours, Whelen has been involved in several motorsports programs including team sponsorships in the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series, NASCAR Busch Series and the NASCAR Grand National Division Busch North Series. Whelen is also an active sponsor of the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series, providing lighting systems for tracks and pace cars throughout the series. The company also provides emergency lights for safety vehicles, tracks and pace cars for ARCA, IRL IndyCar Series, Champ Car World Series, IROC, SCCA, The World of Outlaws and CASCAR.
