Southampton Motor Speedway - Capron, VA - 3rd Straight Rainout
CAPRON, Va. (April 25) - For the third week in a row, foul weather has washed out Southampton Motor Speedway's Friday night NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing program.
The track will take a planned break on Friday, May 2, in deference to NASCAR Winston Cup and Busch Series activities at Richmond International Raceway.
The one-month gap between races will be the longest experienced at SMS since 1999. In September of that year, a break for the Fall RIR events and the 1-2 punch of Tropical Storm Dennis and Hurricane Floyd combined to erase that month from the schedule.
SMS will welcome a new sponsor into the fold on Friday, May 9, when the track plays host to Perry Auto Group Night at the Races.
Pit gates open at 3 p.m. Front gates open and practice begins at 4:30. Qualifying gets under way at 6:40 and the first race goes green at 8.
The feature lineup for May 9 includes: RaceWorld.com Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Mike Duman Auto Sales Limited Late Models (50 laps); Rick's Rock Cafe Pure Stocks (25 laps); Ukrop's Mid-Atlantic Champ Karts (20 laps); and, Super Fours (25 laps).
Tickets are $12 for adults and $4 for youths (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Active-duty military (with ID), senior citizens (65+) and teens (13-19) receive a $2 discount off the adult admission price.
To be eligible for NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series regional and national recognition, SMS's Late Model Stock Car drivers must complete at least 18 races by the Sept. 21 cutoff date.
With three straight rainouts trimming the `03 LMSC slate from 25 to 22 races, SMS General Manager Brad Skelding has indicated that he is already studying the addition of a "Twin" event or two to the schedule to ensure that the 18-race minimum is reached.
The track is afforded a bit more leeway in scheduling events for the Limited Late Model class, SMS's designated NASCAR ShorTrack Division. To qualify for regional and national awards, ShorTrack Division drivers must run a minimum of 16 races by Sept. 21.
Stay tuned for more news on SMS schedule updates.
In its fourth season under the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series banner, Southampton Motor Speedway is a 4/10-mile, paved tri-oval, similar in configuration to Richmond International Raceway. The track is located on U.S. Highway 58, one mile west of Capron and 17 miles east of I-95 (Emporia exit).
