CAPRON, Va. (May 9) - Severe weather (including rain, lightning, high winds and damaging hail) and a subsequent power outage forced the cancellation of Friday night's NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series racing program at Southampton Motor Speedway.

Officials are in the process of assessing damage. Most notably, the fire tower and RaceWorld.com billboard, both located along the backstretch, were toppled. Luckily, both fell away from the track and not on it. Power was restored to the track at about 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon.

Friday's cancellation marked the fourth in a row for SMS - an unprecedented streak of foul weather.

With fingers crossed, SMS plans to swing back into action on Friday, May 16, with U.S. Army Night at the Races.

Pit gates open at 3 p.m. Front gates open and practice begins at 4:30. Time trials get under way at 6:40 and the first race goes green at 8.

The May 16 feature lineup includes: RaceWorld.com Late Model Stock Cars (100 laps); Mike Duman Auto Sales Limited Late Models (50 laps); Rick's Rock Cafe Pure Stocks (25 laps); and, INEX Little Race Cars Legends (25 laps). Rounding out the program is Round 1 of the Mid-Atlantic Toys For Tots Pro Cup Challenge for the Scale Racing League's Arena-Cup division (25 laps).

Tickets are $12 for adults and $4 for youths (6-12). Children under 6 are admitted free when accompanied by an adult. Active-duty military (with ID), senior citizens (65+) and teens (13-19) receive a $2 discount off the adult admission price.

In conjunction with the Toys For Tots campaign, fans who bring a new, unwrapped toy to Friday's event will be entered for a door prize drawing and will get a $2 coupon for SMS's May 23 program (which includes a 200-lap Late Model Stock car feature).

With Friday's cancellation, Internet-connected fans have an extra week to work on the WordSearch puzzle from the "SMS Family Fun Pages" section of the track's Web site - SouthamptonMotorSpeedway.com.

Complete your puzzle, write the requested info on the back of the page and deposit it in the specially-marked box at the Souvenir Trailer on Friday night. From among the correct entries, one lucky winner will be drawn to ride shotgun with pace car driver Dave Watkins during the Limited Late Model race.

In its fourth season under the NASCAR Dodge Weekly Series banner, Southampton Motor Speedway is a 4/10-mile, paved tri-oval, similar in configuration to Richmond International Raceway. The track is located on U.S. Highway 58, one mile west of Capron and 17 miles east of I-95 (Emporia exit).

To learn more about SMS and its schedule of upcoming events, fans may call the Speedway office at (434) 658-RACE or visit the track's web site at www.SouthamptonMotorSpeedway.com.
