Robert Huffman is working hard for a championship
CLAREMONT, NC (June 12, 2003) - Huffman has been there four times before (1990, 1998, 1999, 2000) so he knows what it takes to be in contention for the points title.
But, this season is special. He drives a Toyota and as the manufacturer prepares to enter the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, Huffman knows what it would mean to give TRD their first NASCAR Championship.
"When we started this deal with TRD, it was a new challenge for me as a driver and for our team," says Huffman. "We have been fortunate to win the championship four times. Being with Toyota has been a special relationship. They have worked hard to back our program and we have invested a lot of energy in backing theirs. It was special when we gave them their first NASCAR victory at New River Valley Speedway in 2000. Since then we have won several races including super speedways. Obviously our wins at Daytona and Charlotte have been important, but to win the championship is what will bring us the greatest satisfaction."
The #37 White House Apple Juice/TRD sponsored race teams head to Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway this coming Saturday. "South Boston is a tough track that requires a driver to stay after it the entire race," he says. "The track is a place where you have to focus on hooking up off the corner. It is very easy to over drive the track. You have to understand how vital it is to stay consistent lap after lap. You can be fast for ten laps and then lose your rhythm real easy if you are not careful."
Huffman talked about the Championship and knowing what he had to deal with at each event. "The Hobgoods are good every week. To win the Championship, we know we have to finish in the top five every race."
"We feel good about the race this weekend. We are taking the same car we ran at the dirt track (Oglethorpe Speedway Park). We tested at SoBo recently, and we were happy with how the car ran."
Huffman has two wins this season, visiting victory lane at Daytona International Speedway and Lowe's Motor Speedway. The victory at Charlotte was the 40th of his Goody's Dash Series career.
