Strader second in South Boston.
SOUTH BOSTON, VA (August 3, 2002) - Wilson, North Carolina native, Cam Strader, served notice early that the Wesson Cooking Oil-Peter Pan Peanut Butter Mercury Cougar was going to be a force to be reckoned with Saturday night at the South Boston Speedway.
"I pressed a little to hard in qualifying and wound up starting ninth," Strader said. "We worked on the race set-up today during practice. It felt like a good run, but I just drove it in to deep."
Starting ninth didn't seem to impede his drive to the front. Strader worked his way into the top 5 within the first 15 laps of the event.
Justin Hobgood, of Winnsboro, SC, claimed his second win of the season at Who's Your Daddy Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway in the Goody's Dash Travel Club International Brand Name Gas for Fifty Cents A Gallon "150", Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring event.
Caution flags seemed to be the order of the evening. There were 10 caution periods for a total of 50 laps during the 1 hour, 3 minutes, and 47 seconds it took to run the race.
During the final stages of the race, eventual race winner, Justin Hobgood and Cam Strader paced the field with Jake Hobgood, Adam Dean and Robert Huffman in tow.
"I think we were better on short runs," said Strader after the race. "Justin was just hooked up tonight, and my only chance was to run him as hard as possible and hope he slipped up a little. Justin's a good racer and he doesn't make many mistakes. We did the best we could tonight, they were just a touch better."
"We try to run good for all our sponsors, so they get the exposure they deserve," he said. "We just recently added Heritage Bank and Sprint to our team, and we are just real happy to have those folks on board."
"We're really looking forward to next weeks race at Myrtle Beach. I won my first Dash race there in my rookie year, and Wesson, Peter Pan, and Piggly Wiggly are the sponsors for the race. It always a good incentive to have your supporters involved with the sponsorship of the race."
