Chris Fontaine, driver of the Discount Auto Parts/Suntrust NASCAR All Pro #46 took a 25th place finish at Memphis Motorsports Park on Oct. 12 in the next to the last NASCAR All Pro race for the 2001 season. The finish puts him in 20th place in the season points race.
"Qualifying for the race was rained out, so the field was lined up by points to date for the race start," Chris said. Because of a technicality, Chris had to start in the back of the field in the 36th position.
Of the Memphis track Chris said," It was hard to drive because I didn't have any front wheel breaks for most of the race."
Chris said he advanced his position during the race by," just staying out on the racetrack. When the others fell out or crashed I gained position."
Chris compared Lakeland's USA Speedway to the Memphis track saying,"The front straightaway is curved, not the back, and Memphis is a lot wider. They are about the same length."
About how it feels to break into the top 20 in the 2001 NASCAR All Pro points during his rookie year, Chris said,"It feels good. Hopefully, with one more race this season, we will hold that position."
The last race of the season is at the new 1.33 mile Nashville Superspeedway in Lebanon, TN.
"I have run on some tracks that were one and a half, so I have some experience on the big tracks," Chris said. He said that his goal for Nashville is to,"Keep up with the pack and in the draft to learn more about drafting. And just get more experience on a big track."
Chris and the CJF Racing Team also plans to add several races to the end of this year's schedule by running in the FASCAR series Late Model events held at Orlando Speedworld on Friday evenings during the month of November.
