Chris Fontaine and the Discount Auto Parts/Suntrust NASCAR All Pro #46 visited Lakeland's Rochelle School of the Arts Wednesday, November 14 as part of the Great American Teach-in. Chris spoke to over 400 students from 15 classes on the importance of education and safety and staying off drugs. The school is at 1501 Martin Luther King Ave. in Lakeland, and is one of many schools participating in the event. Chris told the students, " I got started in racing when I told Moe I wanted to put a motorcycle engine on a go-kart and he said I was crazy. But he did say he would help me go racing if I would get good grades, stay off drugs and stay out of trouble." Chris told the students he started in Mini-cups, then went to SARA Late Models before joining the NASCAR All Pro series. He told them he plans to continue up the ladder to the NASCAR Busch series, then NASCAR Winston Cup. He demonstrated safety using his racing gear and the car.Chris also signed autograph cards for the students.The students asked him how much it cost to race, to which he replied," A lot of money, and I couldn't do it without the help of my sponsors-Discount Auto Parts and SunTrust and the help of my mother." This is the second year that Chris has participated in the Great American Teach-in. Chris and the CJF Racing team will run their last NASCAR All Pro race of 2001 November 25th at Nashville Superspeedway. Chris, a rookie, is currently 20th in the NASCAR All Pro 2001 points.
