WISE SCHEDULES SERIES DEBUT

After a four year absence from stock car racing, Rusty Wise and his Control Racing Team from Cherryville, North Carolina are scheduled to make their NASCAR Goody's Dash Series debut in this week's Ekamont Coated Abrasives 125 at Tri-County Motor Speedway in Hudson, North Carolina. Wise's 1997 Pontiac Sunfire will carry Coca Cola and Bell Atlantic NYNEX Mobile sponsorship for the five races that the team has selected to compete in during the remainder of the 1997 season. Lincoln Electric Welding Supplies And Ken's Custom Trailers will also be coming along as associates on the number forty nine car. By competing in five, or fewer, races this year, Wise keeps open his eligibility for a run at the Rookie of the Year Award in 1998. The incredible challenge of building something as complex as a race car and the team to maintain it, is what first inspired Wise to become involved in racing. He found himself faced with the opportunity to meet that challenge not once, but twice in his first attempt at racing. A devastating fire at the Control Racing shop in 1990 put a halt to his racing just two years into a promising career. "We lost everything." said Wise. "Since then, we've been working hard to try to recreate the entire program. A tragedy like that changes your whole outlook on life... on, and off the track. I used to think hitting the wall or blowing an engine was bad, but when you lose everything, it helps you put things in perspective." During the rebuilding process, Wise, and the Control Racing Team decided to take their program in a slightly different direction. They wanted to get into a touring division and the NASCAR Goody's Dash Series was the logical step. Now, with the car, the team, the equipment and the sponsors all in place, Rusty's ready to meet the next challenge. That challenge will come when he puts the new Pontiac Sunfire on the line against some of the toughest competition in the southeast Friday night at Tri-County. In addition to the upcoming race this week, Wise plans to try to put the Pontiac in the field in both of the Dash Series events yet to be held this year at Hickory Motor Speedway, where he was runner-up in the 1989 Late-Model Stock Rookie of the Year race, and Bristol Motor Speedway. From there, they will either try to make Myrtle Beach Speedway in August or, possibly, Charlotte Motor Speedway in July. But racing isn't the only thing that fills Wise's life. Recently married, he also owns and serves as president of Wise Electric Control Inc. in Cherryville, NC. Rusty is quick to credit his family and friends for their support, allowing him to pursue his career objectives while balancing his personal life without compromising the highest level of quality in either.
