BECHTELSVILLE, PA MARCH 14, 2000 . . . "Chances are good that we are going to be a contender for the championship at Grandview Speedway," said former NASCAR modified champion Ray Swinehart. The popular racing talent was talking about his chances at winning the lucrative NASCAR Weekly Racing Series title at the one-third-mile, clay banked oval in 2000. Swinehart will one of many racers who will be on hand when the free-to-the-public practice session is presented at Grandview Speedway on Saturday, March 25. The green flag will drop to get action started at 12 noon. "We plan to redeem ourselves after a pretty lousy season in 1999. It didn't help when I injured my leg midway through the season, said Swinehart. "We plan to have a brand new Bicknell chassis racer ready for the season opener at Grandview Speedway on April 1 and we will have another new car in place for the April 9 opener at Big Diamond Raceway." Grandview will offer a tripleheader show on April 1, kicking off their 38th consecutive season of stock car racing, featuring modifieds, late models and PA Sportsman. Racing will start at 5 p.m. Swinehart has been a past champion of the lucrative Kenworth/Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Dual Track Championship which encompasses events run at Grandview Speedway and Big Diamond Raceway. The 47-year-old multi feature winner at both tracks will be going after the Dual Track title and titles at Grandview Speedway and Big Diamond Raceway. In addition Swinehart will be running some midweek big block modified shows when his schedule allows. And he might even throw in one or two USNA modified events. The veteran modified racer is very excited about plans that will have his 16-year-old son Steve running some events this season. "He has run some fun karting events, nothing serious. He has shown a lot of interest in driving race cars. He has been help to the team and to us here in our shop, J&L Speed Equipment (Bechtelsville)," said Swinehart. "He will run a few events at Grandview and a few at Big Diamond. Next season we plan to run a full schedule." Sponsorship for Swinehart's chase for the crowns will come from Gary Weller Painting, Kountry Kitchen, Dame's Chevrolet, Profile Trailers and Bonanza Steak House. Some of the best talents in area dirt track modified racing will offer plenty of competition for Swinehart. Terry Meitzler will be looking for another title. Jeff Strunk is going after three titles. Other talents running at Grandview Speedway include Dennis Bailey, Glenn Strunk, Ed Aikin, John Willman, Kerry Kratz and a host of others. Grandview Speedway will offer tripleheader shows each Saturday at 5 p.m. during the month of April. And fans will have the opportunity to see a FREE PREVIEW on Saturday, March 25 with action starting at 12 noon. The popular NASCAR sanctioned racing facility is located on Passmore Road, just off Route 100, in Bechtelsville, PA., 10 miles north of Pottstown.
