"The management, staff, and competitors of Portland Speedway join the rest of this great nation in condemning the deliberate and cowardly attack on our fellow citizens and our country. We are shocked, saddened and angered by this unprovoked violation of our land, resulting in thousands of lives lost, families torn apart, cultural symbols destroyed, and our mobile society paralyzed.
"As Americans, we stand four-square behind our President, Congress and our Military in their quest to find the perpetrators of these heinous acts and bring them to a swift and certain justice. We also believe that to completely alter our lifestyles in reaction to these despicable acts of terrorism is, in effect, allowing the terrorists to prevail. Therefore, we will proudly continue with our plans to host the NASCAR Weekly Racing Series Championship Race at Portland Speedway the Friday night, September 14, 2001.
"Stock Car Racing is a uniquely American sport, and Portland Speedway will welcome fans to our clay oval on Friday night for a Celebration of America. The Oregon Army National Guard will be our honored guests, and they will present an Honor Color Guard and cannon salute as a proud reminder of our American military heritage. We are asking all of our fans and patrons to wear their "Red , White, & Blue" ribbons and other apparel to the track on Friday, and to bring small American flags for the very patriotic Opening Ceremonies we have planned.
"Standing together as loyal citizens of these United States of America, we will demonstrate to the world that nobody - even through ghastly acts of terrorism - can defeat our spirit of boundless optimism. And it is with that spirit that Freedom will be preserved for future generations of Americans."
