BECHTELSVILLE, PA SEPTEMBER 5, 1999 . . . Veteran modified stock car racing talent Jeff Strunk is the 1999 Motor Truck Equipment Co. Kenworth Cummins PA NASCAR Modified Champion. Five feature wins, three at Big Diamond Raceway and two at Grandview Speedway, along with consistent performance earned the Bethel, PA racer $15,000 out of the $40,000 posted point fund. Strunk, driving the Keith Harring Motorsports Kenworth Cummins modified, tallied 11,145 points to win the prestigious championship that included NASCAR Modified events run at Big Diamond Raceway in Minersville, PA and Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA. Strunk, winner of a number of championships at area speedways, celebrated his championship in victory lane at Grandview Speedway on Saturday night. His younger brother Glenn had won the feature race for modified stock cars. While popping champagne corks Strunk thanked his sponsors, fans and crew along with car owner Keith Harring for their support. Kevin Hartnett, without benefit of a feature win this season, was able to turn consistent performances into a second place finish in the final point tally. The Perkasie, PA driver used three different cars to earn 10,400 points. Second place was worth $7,000. Jon Kellner (Lansdale), another driver with no feature wins, finished third with 9970 points. Popular veteran Dennis Bailey (Kutztown) grabbed fourth with 9925 counters and Shawn Reimert (Oley) finished fifth with 9445 points. Thirteen drivers met all the requirements to share in the point fund. Drivers were required to run at least 10 NASCAR Modified events at each track. Interesting to note that nine of the top 13 point series finishers did not visit victory lane at either track this season. Did someone say consistent performance pays off? And there were seventeen different feature winners in the series with Duane Howard getting eight wins, all at Big Diamond Raceway. Tom Mayberry had seven wins, all at Grandview Speedway, and Keith Hoffman also had seven wins, all at Big Diamond Raceway. Jeff Strunk took five wins while Rick Schaffer had three feature victories and John Willman took two. Earning one win each were Donny Erb, Jim Hauer, Kenny Gilmore, Chip Slocum, Todd Heydt, Ray Swinehart, Terry Meitzler, Ron Haring, Kenny Gruber, Craig VonDohren and Glenn Strunk. More than 110 drivers earned points in the series. Finishing in sixth in the final standings was Smokey Warren (Jonestown) 9145 followed by John Willman (Zionville) 8890, Jack Hartnett (Telford) 8755, Glenn Strunk (Bechtelsville) 8250 (despite missing several events), Mike Bailey (Kutztown) 8220, Ray Swinehart (Bechtelsville) 6750 (the defending champion missed six weeks because of a leg injury), Bob Trapper (Scranton) 6700 and Dennis Fisher (Pottstown) 6605. Point fund money will be paid out at either the Grandview Speedway or Big Diamond Raceway awards banquet later in the year.
