A Look at the NASCAR Elite Division, Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series Top 10 drivers
DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (August 19, 2003) - The following is a glance at the NASCAR Elite Division, Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series Top 10 in the series championship standings heading into the Northwest Chevy Dealers "150" presented by Comcast at Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash. Sunday, August 24. The race in Kent, Wash. will be race eleven of 14 on the NASCAR Raybestos Brakes Northwest Series schedule.
No. 1 - Chris Hart
No. 5 Yakima Implement Chevrolet), Hart Racing. Last week's ranking: 1st. Hart continued his impressive dominance of the series this season after changing an engine earlier in the day and qualified 6th at Raceway Park. Hart raced conservative and put himself into position to win prior to a late race caution. Hart finished second to record his 8th top five and 9th top ten finish of the season.
No. 2 - Jason Jefferson
No. 97 Northwest Dodge Dealers Dodge), Simmonson Racing. Last week's ranking: 3rd. Jason Jefferson finished 4th at Raceway Park August 9 and moved up one position in the points. In ten starts in 2003, Jefferson has one win, seven top 5 and eight top 10 finishes. He has also completed 1239 laps out of a possible 1260 contested to date, and leads the Victory Circle Chassis' Rookie-of-the-Year standings by 24 points over Jeff Bailey. Jason Jefferson will be making his first road course start at Pacific Raceways this weekend.
No. 3 - Jeff Jefferson
No. 42 Morgan Transport Chevrolet), Allison Racing. Last Week's ranking: 2nd. Jeff Jefferson looked to have another top five finish locked up when a late race caution crippled the #42. The accident left Jefferson only to limp around the track and a 9th place finish. Jefferson has eight top ten finishes and has completed all but one lap contested this season.
No. 4 - Gary Lewis
No. 73 The Sign Factory Pontiac), Lewis Racing. Last week's ranking: 4th. Lewis continues his steady bid for a second series championship after a 13th place performance at Raceway Park August 9. Lewis maintains the fourth spot in the standings but drops to 160 points out of the lead. In ten starts, Lewis has one win, six top 5 and seven top finishes, along with 1251 laps completed out of 1260 contested.
No. 5 - John Bender
No. 18 Big Daddy's Bar & Grill Chevrolet), Kearny Racing. Last week's ranking: 5th. At Raceway Park August 9, Bender scored his second consecutive 6th place performance in as many races. Bender has two wins, three top five and six top ten finishes in nine starts this season with 1093 laps completed.
No. 6 - Kevin Hamlin
No. 33 Corridor Electric Chevrolet), Hamlin Racing. Last week's ranking: 7th. Hamlin finished in the 8th position at Raceway Park August 9th after being assessed a time penalty for contact with Riehl on the last lap of the 125-lap event. Hamlin has five top five and six top ten finishes in ten starts and has completed 1060 of 1260 laps contested this season.
No. 7 - Joe Benedetti
No. 2 Racecals Pontiac), Benedetti Racing. Last week's ranking: 6th. Benedetti finished 11th at Raceway Park August 9th after starting in the 4th position. He drops one position in the NASCAT Top 10 and is looking forward to racing a Pacific Raceways this weekend as he will race in front of his "hometown" fans for the first time in his career. Benedetti is from nearby Auburn, Wash.
No. 8- Rick Suran
No. 40 Eastside Paving Pontiac), Suran Racing. Last week's ranking: 10th. Suran continues his mid-season charge up the point standings after scoring his first top five finish of the season at Raceway Park August 9. Suran moved up to 8th in the standings from the 10th position and sits just 164 markers out of the top five.
No. 9 - Steven Howard
No. 38 B&$ Plumbing Chevrolet), Howard Racing. Last week's ranking: 8th. Howard suffered through his second straight DNF after loosing and engine just 47 laps into the race at Raceway Park August 9th. Howard falls to ninth place in the NASCAR Top 10 and 383 points behind leader Hart. Howard has four top ten finishes in ten starts and has completed 1164 laps out of 1260.
No. 10 - Jeff Bailey
No. 27 Frank & Son Auto Body Chevrolet), Bailey Racing. Last week's ranking: 9th. Bailey finished 21st at Raceway Park August 9th after loosing an engine late in the event. Bailey will make his second road course start of the season this weekend at Pacific Raceways after competing at Infineon Raceway earlier this season where he finished 7th in his first Featherlite Southwest Series start.
