(West Salem, WI - May 13, 2000) After a week off for his day job, racing on the NASCAR Re/Max Challenge Series, Steve Carlson was back at it in West Salem on Saturday night, and came home with his second fast time, and second feature win of the season. He worked his way to second place, then a late-race yellow allowed him to close on leader Brent Kirchner, as he moved by with three laps to go to take the win.

Jeff Krueger looked poised to post his first-ever Late Model feature win, as he pulled away from Andy Burgess and Troy Goodenough early, and opened up a six length lead, before the first yellow flew on lap seven, when Bill Niles spun coming out of turn four, and slammed into the frontstretch wall. He was able to open up his lead again, but Kirchner got around Goodenough, and closed in on Krueger by lap eight. It took Kirchner just two laps to move by Krueger on the outside, taking the lead coming out of turn two.

The second yellow flew on lap 13, as Jim Christenson spun in turn three, with Tim Hagen sustaining some damage to his right side in the altercation. Kirchner opened up a six-length lead of his own on the restart, as the quick timer moved up through the field. Carlson led the charge, with Tony Bagstad, Brad Powell and Kevin Nuttleman following through.

Carlson got by Krueger on the outside on lap 17, and quickly put the 11 car in his rear view mirror as he closed on Kirchner. His chase was short, as Jim Hagel and J. Herbst tangled in turn two, with Hagel spinning and coming to a stop on the traffic, bringing out the final yellow.

Carlson got a good jump on the restart, and pulled alongside Kirchner, but the black 88 held off the black 66. Carlson looked low on lap 21, then went high on lap 23 heading into turn three, and came out of turn four in the lead for good.

Kirchner crossed the line in second, but was too light in technical inspection, and was disqualified. Tony Bagstad moved up to third, with Powell and Nuttleman rounding out the top five. Krueger finished sixth, followed by Lamoreaux, Kurt Thicke, Steve Holzhausen and Goodenough.

Mike Ehde and Mike Belling won heat races, and Mark Lamoreaux and Brent Kirchner won the twin Bud Dashes. Todd Korish led Bill Niles and Jim Christenson into the feature in the B-Main. Steve Carlson was fast timer, clocking in at 98.898 MPH.

Dan Gilster became the second Gilster to take a Sportsman feature, as he chased down Rick Shishler, taking the lead on lap six, and cruising home to the win.

Shisler led the first two laps, before the yellow flew on lap three when Randy Steinhoff and Blake Horstman slammed the wall in turn two. Jeff Baker took over the lead from Shisler at the end of lap four, but Shisler battled back on lap five.

Gilster made his move when Baker fell back, sliding under Baker, then moving to the outside right away, and getting by Shisler coming out of turn four. Shisler finished second, Baker third, Jon Barette fourth and Tony Ciano fifth. Corey Jankowski finished sixth, followed by Chand Wehling, Don Henderson, Mike Campbell and Jimmy Gilster.

Sportsman heats went to Trent Boettcher, Phil Schreier and Paul Smith, and the Odd and Even Bud Dashes were won by Randy Steinhoff and Rick Shisler. Rick Steinhoff advanced to the feature by taking the B-Main over Ralph Barette. Tony Ciano broke his one-month old qualifying record, timing in at 87.061 MPH.

Al Wolf got by Ed Senn on lap nine, then watched as Adam Degenhardt made a late charge through the field, but ran out of time in his bid for the the win. Degenhardt finished second, followed by Branden Berg, Jason Bolster and Dan Linnehan. Senn settled for sixth, followed by Robert Challet, Craig Kohlmeier, Dean Ashbacher and Dale Jacob.

Thunderstox heat winners were Jason Bolster, Jes Tenner and Les Stanfield, Dan Linnehan took the Bud Dash, and Dale Jacob advanced to the feature by winning the B-Main.

In the Queen Bees race, experience showed, as Ruth Liebch, a former Women In Wheels champion, got by Tammy Schermerhorn with three laps to go, and came away the winner. Liz Galstad got an early lead with a lightning quick start, but bailed out by lap five. Schermerhorn got by Galstad before she headed pitward, and led five laps before turning the lead over to Liebsch. Lorey Long got by Schermerhorn on the final lap to take second.
