Paul Menard captures first career Re/Max Challenge Series, Nascar Touring Bud Pole Fast Qualifier Award.

Madison, Illinois (July 19, 2002)--Paul Menard, of Eau Claire, Wisconsin, captured his first career RE/MAX Challenge Series, NASCAR Touring Bud Pole Fast Qualifier award, Friday afternoon at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Illinois.

Menard, the son of Indy car owner John Menard, toured the 1.25-mile oval at 34.559 seconds (130.212 mph). With a mandatory series invert, Menard will start the RE/MAX Challenge 125, Saturday afternoon at 4:00 p.m. (CT), from the 12th position.

Davenport, Iowa driver Justin Diercks timed in second at 34.711 seconds (129.642 mph) with Beloit, Wisconsin driver Ryan Hanson third at 34.772 seconds (129.414 mph). Brian Hoppe of Madison, Wisconsin (34.779 seconds, 129.388 mph) and Steve Carlson of West Salem, Wisconsin 34.795 seconds, 129.329 mph) rounded out the top five.

"It's about time," said Menard of his pole run. "We been trying to get one of these for a few years now. This was one of our goals at the start of the season."

The RE/MAX Challenge 125 is being run as a companion event to the Busch Series, Grand National Division. The event can be seen on the Speed Channel, July 29 at 7:00 p.m. (CT).
