Ronald Hill wins pole at Lonesome Pine.
COEBURN, VA - "Too tight" was the key phrase buzzing around the pits on Saturday evening following time trials. But for Ronald Hill of Rougemont, NC, 'too tight' was a blessing as Hill won the Hobart Sales and Service Pole Award for Sunday's Bailey's Autumn Classic 300 at Lonesome Pine International Raceway.
For Hill, it seemed he knew the 3/8-mile paved oval well. But in reality, it is his first trip to the Lonesome Pine facility.
"First time I saw this place was Friday morning," said Hill after qualifying. "It's a real nice facility. I'm pleased to get the pole. I'd just like to thank the folks here for having us and the opportunity to be here."
Hill's Puryear Tank Lines Chevrolet Monte Carlo blazed to a 16.370 lap on his way to the pole on Saturday night, but according to the NASCAR late model stock car driver, the car was too tight given the track conditions over the last two days.
"We were trying to get a top 10 but the way the track has been for the last two days it's been loose. We actually had our car too tight and I overrun it on my second lap. But I believe tomorrow's race is going to be a real tough and competitive race. It's been a long time since I have raced with some of these guys and some of 'em have got some hot rods."
The field was separated by two tenths of second from first thru tenth, but no driver got close to the track record of 16.258 previously set by Wade Day.
The top ten positions were determined through time trials with positions eleven thru thirty-two determined through heat races following qualifying.
The green flag on the Bailey's Autumn Classic will drop at 2:00 p.m at Lonesome Pine International Raceway.
