Irwindale, Calif. - - They've taken it right down to the wire, Irwindale Speedway's top weekly NASCAR division. The Food 4 Less Super Late Models are about to do double battle on Saturday night, and everyone knows that someone can (and most likely will) walk off with the series title clinched coming out of these two races. There are a full 100 hundred points on the table for this night and whoever walks off with them will have to earn every one of them!
The nationwide chain of True Value Hardware Stores will sponsor the night and be the title sponsor for the all-important Twin 50 F4LSLM events.
Goleta's Greg Voigt still leads the division with 636 points, but Ben Walker from Santa Clarita, by virtue of wins in each of the last three events, is only a few points behind at 592. Chino Hills' favorite SLM driver, Tim Woods III is still within striking distance at 534, and Tommy Fry (Simi Valley) and David Brandon are "keeping everyone honest" with 492 and 434 points respectively. Cake walks are not part of this championship point chase.
And, Irwindale's NASCAR Super Stocks and Mini Stocks are every bit as competitive and close to their respective titles. In the Supers, Jeff Green has the points lead, but Mike Price has been coming on of late and looks quite serious about a repeat of last year's championship. T.K. Karvasek's late season slump appears to be over but he's got a tough row to hoe with 506 points and only three races to go for the honors. Hometowns for the above three protagonists are (in order:) Long Beach, San Pedro, and North Hills.
Adding a bit of truckin'-style spiciness to the proceedings, the Mechanix Wear Speed Trucks will be making one of their always-anticipated touring appearances at the Irwindale oval on Saturday night. Feisty and fast, these all-equal "spec" machines feature driving skill as the most important component in the package.
Irwindale Speedway is family fun from four o'clock on. That's when the gates open and the live band starts playing, and the car club show starts shining, and the racers start qualifying. An in-stands autograph party sponsored by those great Alta Dena Milk Chugs follows shortly thereafter as do contests, games, and just general good times right up to the start of racing at seven o'clock. Getting out to Irwindale is the key though easier/closer parking, your pick of your favorite seat, and plenty of pre-race ShowTime!
