(West Salem, WI - July 1, 2000) Two cagey veterans waged battle over the last half of the Clason Pontiac 25 at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway on Saturday night. Steve Holzhausen threatened to lead them all, but Tom Carlson set him up, and got by on the inside on lap 22 to take the lead, but Holzhausen retook the lead on lap 24, and earned his second feature win of the season.

Holzhausen started on the pole, and pulled away from Kurt Thicke early, but a lap three yellow for a six-car accident in turn four slowed his run. Mark Lamoreaux took the brunt of the incident, as he ended up in the wall between the turns, but he tore off the sheet metal, and came away with an 18th place finish.

Holzhausen stretched his lead again on the restart, but not until after Thicke tried to get inside of him for the top spot. Thicke's attempt failed, and Carlson used the high side to take second, and closed on the leader's rear bumper.

Mike Koeneke led the charge around Thicke, who battled all the way, as Koeneke took six laps to get by. Paul Proksch got by a lap later, en route to a third-place finish, just ahead of Koeneke.

At the front, Carlson seemed content to follow the line of Holzhausen, until lap 18, when he started looking outside. Three laps later, he ducked inside of the 78 car heading into three, and the two cars came across the line in a virtual dead heat. By the time they came out of turn two, Carlson was in the lead, and Holzhausen had to drop down behind the 51 of Carlson.

He wasn't content there, however, as he quickly worked his way underneath Carlson as the two ended lap 23, and he duplicated Carlson's pass as he retook the top spot coming out of turn two to post his second feature win of the season.

Carlson's runner-up finish was his best of the year, while Proksch, Koeneke and Mike Belling rounded out the top five, ahead of Thicke, Kevin Nuttleman, Brent Kirchner, points leader Brad Powell and Tony Bagstad.

Frank Doherty led all 12 laps in the B-Main, as he led Greg Croell, Todd Korish and Tim Hagen into the feature. Korish tried to get by Croell on the final lap for second, but Croell managed to hold him off by a bumper at the finish.

Defending track champ Kevin Nuttleman earned his first fast time of the year, as he clocked in at 20.397 seconds, for an average speed of 96.191 MPH. Mike Ehde and Greg Scheck won the qualifying heats, while the Twin Bud Dashes went to Steve Holzhausen and Mark Lamoreaux.

Rick Shisler led all 15 laps of the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature, but benefited from the battle between Corey Jankowski and Jeff Baker for second to take the win. Jankowski and Baker traded off the second spot several times in the last five laps, with Jankowski finally getting the spot by a half length at the line.

Dan Gilster finished fourth, followed by Jon Barrette, Randy Steinhoff, Jimmy Gilster, Tony Ciano and Chuck Timm.

Tony Ciano was fast qualifier at 22.728 seconds, for an average speed of 86.325 MPH. The semi went to . Todd Lockington won the opening heat, while qualifying heats went to Chand Wehling and Trent Boettcher. Tom Thill and Corey Jankowski won the Bud Dashes, and Thill and Wehling each won their preliminary races just one week after going over the wall in turn three.

John Edwards and Jes Tenner battled side by side for the first six laps of the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but Edwards spun in turn two on lap seven, and Tenner came away with a clean sweep, taking his heat, the Bud Dash and the Clason Pontiac feature. Dan Secor closed on Tenner down the stretch, but couldn't make a run in lapped traffic on the final lap. Secor finished second, followed by Dale Jacob, Mary Schill and Branden Berg.

Heat wins went to Robert Challet, Jes Tenner and John Edwards. Tenner also came away the Bud Dash winner, while Al Bartels led the field in the B-Main.
