BELLING OUTRUNS PROKSCH FOR SECOND LA CROSSE WIN

(West Salem, WI - July 3, 2000) Mike Belling joined Steve Carlson as the only two-time feature winners this season in the NASCAR Late Model division at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway, as he chased down Andy Burgess and Brent Kirchner, then held Paul Proksch at bay for the win in the CC 106/Quillin's 25.

Jimmy Gilster joined Belling as a two-time feature winner, as he claimed the Sportsman feature, making him the only Sportsman driver with two feature wins on the season.

Andy Burgess outgunned Greg Croell at the start of the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model feature, and opened up a 4-length lead by lap eight, when the first yellow wiped out the lead as seventh-place Kurt Thicke spun coming out of turn two, and collected Ronnie Hawley, Jr. and Marv DeGarmo.

Burgess led for two more laps on the restart, but Kirchner moved by on lap ten, with Belling following by on the inside for second. Kirchner's time at the front was short-lived, as Belling ducked underneath him going into turn three two laps later, and came out of four with the lead.

Proksch was able to follow Belling around Kirchner, but was unable to stay with the leader, as Belling opened a three-car advantage. Proksch closed the gap on several occasions, but never quite enough to make a run at the win.

Steve Carlson made a late run to take third, with Kirchner fourth, new points leader Kevin Nuttleman fifth, and Burgess sixth. Rick Wateski, Tom Carlson, former points leader Brad Powell and Greg Croell rounded out the top ten.

Nuttleman put the pressure on points leader Brad Powell by claiming the top qualifying spot, averaging 96.068 MPH to edge Powell by just under two-tenths of a MPH. Kraig Burrows survived a five car accident in the first qualifying heat to take the win. Mark Lamoreaux took the second qualifying heat, while Paul Proksch and Steve Carlson took the Bud Dash wins. Mike Ehde led the way in the B-Main, as he, Todd Korish, Tim Nelson and Ronnie Hawley, Jr. advanced into the feature.

Jimmy Gilster took the lead from Greg Scheck and the Heavy Chevy on lap three, and became the first Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman driver to take two feature wins on the season. Tony Ciano came up through the field late to claim second, with Kevin Eddy third, Jeff Baker fourth and Greg Scheck fifth. Blake Horstman, Dan Gilster, Chuck Timm, Rob Mahan and Chand Wehling rounded out the top ten.

Corey Jankowski took his second quick qualifying time of the season, tripping the timer at 22.863 for an average speed of 85.816. Randy Steinhoff claimed the non-qualifying heat, while qualifying heat wins went to Rick Steinhoff and Rob Mahan. The twin Bud Dashes went to Ralph Barrette and Mike Campbell.

Try as he might, Kelly Schendel couldn't match Jason Stark anywhere on the track in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but he not only matched, but beat him in post race inspection, as Schendel passed, and Stark was disqualified for an illegal air cleaner, giving Schendel the win.

Points leader Jason Bolster finished second, followed by Dale Jacob, Matt Inglett and pole sitter Jeff Waughtal. Al Bartels, Robert Challet, Dean Ashbacher, Les Stanfield and last week's winner Jes Tenner rounded out the top ten.

Heat wins went to Dean Ashbacher, Jeff Waughtal and Jason Stark. Jason Bolster took the Bud dash win, and Les Stanfield took the B-Main win.
