(West Salem July 22, 2000) - For most of the 2000 race season, defending track champion Kevin Nuttleman has been at or near the top of the Midwest Fuels NASCAR Late Model points standings at the La Crosse Fairgrounds Speedway. He used strong qualifying performances over the past month to put the pressure on former leader Brad Powell, but came into the Ray Hutson Chevrolet 25 looking for his first checkered flag of the season. He chased down the lead group, outduelled Powell for second, then went around Mike Belling on lap 22 to earn that flag, his first of the season.

Kurt Thicke started on the pole, and worked his way by Isaak Owen on the first lap, as Belling and Paul Proksch moved to the outside lane, with both of them getting by Owen by lap five. Belling quickly chased down Thicke at the point, and made the pass for the lead on lap eight, getting by on the outside coming out of turn two.

Belling led for five laps, opening up a good lead on the field, before the yellow flew on lap 13, as Bill Niles and Greg Croell both spun in turn four. Before the late models could get a full lap in, Tim Nelson and Bob Timm hit the wall coming out of turn four.

Powell went for the lead on the restart, but drifted high, allowing Nuttleman to get underneath him for second on lap 15, but the yellow flew before the lap was completed, as Timm lost his motor in turn one, spreading oil on the track.

The last 12 laps went green, with Nuttleman making the pass of Powell for second on the inside coming out of turn two on lap 17. He quickly tried to duck inside of Belling as well, but was unable to get fully underneath the 43 car. He went to the outside, gradually pulling alongside Belling, and taking the lead for good coming out of turn four on lap 22.

Belling finished second, followed by Proksch, Powell and Thicke in the top five. Owen took sixth, with Todd Korish, Rick Wateski, Tom Carlson and Brent Kirchner rounding out the lead ten.

Nuttleman also set fast time, clocking a 96.342 MPH lap around the .545-mile oval to lead the 31 late models who qualified on the evening. Ken Hutchens took the opening heat win, while qualifying heats went to Frank Doherty and Greg Croell. The Odd and Even Bud Dash wins went to Andy Burgess and Brent Kirchner.

Mike Campbell turned in a dominating performance in his Bud Dash to take the checkered, and threatened to do the same in the Ray Hutson Chevrolet Sportsman feature. Yellows on lap four and 13 erased his leads, and left him to fend off four of the top seven cars in points, but he was up to the task, giving up the top spot only briefly on lap nine to Tony Ciano as he took the win. Ciano got by Jeff Baker on the final lap for second, and Dan Gilster edged Baker at the line for third. Jon Barrette finished fifth, followed by Corey Jankowski, Blake Horstman, Don Henderson, Rick Shisler and Tom Thill.

Points leader Dan Gilster led the way among the 39 Sportsman cars who timed in, averaging 86.443 for his trip around the oval in West Salem. Jeff Winterfield won the first heat race, while qualifying heat wins went to Don Henderson and Rick Shisler, and the Bud Dash wins went to Jeff Baker and Mike Campbell.

John Edwards and Dan Secor battled side by side for 12 of the 15 laps in the United Auto Supply Thunderstox feature, but on the final lap, Secor was able to pull in front for the win, and Edwards fell to third as Jes Tenner managed to squeeze underneath him for second. Dean Ashbacher and Rob Curran rounded out the top five.

Heat wins in the Thunderstox division went to Jason Stark, Chris Vinson and Dan Secor, while Les Stanfield won the Bud Dash, and Branden Berg took the Second Over the Line Wins Novelty event.
