(West Salem, WI -- October 5, 2000) Dan Gilster may not have taken the big Oktoberfest prize in the Oktoberfest 25 for the La Crosse Sportsman drivers, but he was celebrating nonetheless. His seventh place finish clinched his first track championship at the speedway, and precipitates a move up to NASCAR Late Model next season. That's a move he'll get a head start on this Saturday, as he competes in the NASCAR Northern Series events.

Fans were watching two battles in the La Crosse Sportsman feature, the one at the front, and further back in the pack, the battle for the championship between Dan Gilster and Corey Jankowski.

The second battle got more interesting, as Jankowski charged to the front, and Gilster fell from his seventh starting spot, back to 17th. On lap nine, a three-car accident slowed the action, as Trent Boettcher and Sam Andersen tangled coming out of turn four, and Tony Ciano spun in a separate incident.

Things really got hot two laps later, as Corey Jankowski moved to take the lead from Mike Campbell through turns three and four. There appeared to be plenty of room for the pass, but Jankowski spun into the infield, while Campbell recovered to remain in second behind new leader Blake Horstman.

Jankowski went to the pits, clinching the title for Gilster, while Todd Korish and Jeff Baker closed in on Horstman at the front. Baker got by Korish with seven laps left, and made a run at the lead, but he lost power coming out of turn four on the final lap, and slipped to sixth at the finish as Horstman claimed the win. Korish, who moved up to the NASCAR Late Model division this year, took second, followed by Jon Barrette, Campbell and Chand Wehling. Baker, Gilster, Randy Steinhoff, Rick Steinhoff and Kevin Eddy rounded out the top ten.

Chuck Timm broke Tony Ciano's track record in qualifying, turning an 87.163 MPH lap to pace the Sportsman drivers. Gilster put more pressure on Jankowski in the points race by qualifying second, while Jankowski was third. Heat wins went to Josh Theireing, Don Henderson, Sam Andersen, Jimmy Gilster and Randy Steinhoff. Rick Steinhoff also came through with the win in the semi-feature.

In the first Oktoberfest feature of the 2000 race weekend, Les Stanfield took the lead on lap three, then pulled away from the field, taking the win in the Thunderstox feature by a quarter of a length. Stanfield slid his car out of turn four to take the checkered, sliding sideways over the line.

Jeff Waughtal claimed second in the 15-lapper, with Matt Inglett, Dan Secor and Al Bartels rounding out the top five. Despite finishing out of the top ten, Jason Bolster cruised his way through the field, and clinched the 2000 Thunderstox championship.

Bill Inglett took the semi win, while heat wins went to Jes Tenner, Branden Berg, Jeff Schaitel and Kelly Schendel.

Ray Kreyer jumped to the front of the Junior Motorsports feature, but Ben Kreyer wasn't about to give up the points race, as he moved by on lap 13 to take the lead, just before the white flag. Ray Kreyer battled back, but Ben was able to hold him off for the win. Paul Schmudlach was right behind the lead pair at the finish, and Scott Kleist and Reed Powers rounded out the top five

Heat wins went to Lee Kreyer and Mike Maerz.

All eyes were on Steve Johanneck again in the Double OO, as the Modified driver took on the Thunderstox field, and a handful of sportsman cars in the Double OO race. While he made his way quickly to the rear of the field, and got started working his way through, two cars were able to keep him at bay, as 36 took the win, with Jason Bolster second. Johanneck was third, followed by Jason Stark and Rob Curran.

In the Budweiser 75 Enduro, two red flags early in the race slowed the field of 89 cars that took to the quarter-mile, but Tim Ploen of Richfield, MN was able to navigate his way through to take the win by two seconds over Todd Lemke of Caledonia. Keith Kirchner, Alan Arneson and Jeff Jessberger rounded out the top five, while Jeff Martin, Jason Dummer, Pam O'Rourke, Ben Hehl and Danny Cole, Jr. all managed top ten finishes.
