SAVANNAH, GA (March 15, 2003) - Jake Hobgood, 2002 Goody's Dash Series, NASCAR Touring Champion, gambled on the weather and headed for Oglethorpe Speedway on Friday night.
"For at least 12 miles we went through some of the hardest rain I have seen in a while. But, when we got near the track it was not raining. So we unloaded and tried out the track," said Hobgood.
Several Goody's Dash Series drivers had intended on attending the open practice, but an unfavorable forecast caused them to reconsider.
Jake's thoughts on the upcoming event, "This is going to be fun!"
He went on to say, "For the Hobgood family, this brings back a lot of memories. We spent a lot of time in dirt racing before getting into the Goody's Dash Series. This track is really a nice facility. It is beautiful."
Jake also shared that the he realized that the track will be much different come race day.
"When we come back for the race, the track will be worked in a lot more than it was for this practice session. We had a lot to learn to help the rest of the competitors prepare for the race. This will be totally different than the asphalt racing we are accustomed to. The local guys told me that the track really tightens up on race day. I think it will make for a fun and exciting race, not only for us as a series, but for the fans to enjoy as well."
On Monday some of the drivers are planning to be in the Annual Saint Patrick's Day Parade in downtown Savannah. Drivers hoping to be there include Robert Huffman, winner at Daytona and 4-time series' champion, along with Randy Humphrey, Kelly Sutton, and T.J. Majors. Humphrey made his mark in the Brook's and Dunn Legend Shootout Series before moving into the Goody's Dash Series. Kelly Sutton was recently featured in Sports Illustrated and People Magazine for her accomplishments not only as a female driver, but as someone who overcome the effects of MS. Majors is new to the series in 2003. He is a protege' of Dale Earnhardt. Jr.
The race is scheduled for Saturday, April 5, 2003. A full field is expected for this first ever Goody's Dash race on dirt. This will be the first NASCAR Touring event at Oglethorpe Speedway since the early 1970's when Richard Petty went to victory lane.
