HERE'S A NEWSFLASH: Greg Pursley DID NOT win the Lucas Oil Super Late Model feature on Saturday night at Irwindale -- The Canyon Country driver who had a record-making four wins in a row in the Dodge NASCAR Weekly Racing Series division ended up in 18 place in the hotly-contested 75-lapper, a victim of an early breakage of his King Taco Monte Carlo's track bar, one of those "six-dollar" (well maybe a few dollars more than that) part that can derail polesitter and backmarker alike. Instead, the action-packed race starred Corona's own Russell White and the flying Bruncati Brothers (Rancho Cucamonga and Glendora, Tony and James, respectively).

Pat Mintey Jr. of Quartz Hill won the NAPA Auto Parts Super Truck show in fine style after Los Altos' Mark Holeman led the first 18 go-arounds. Action at the front of the pack involved a considerable amount of typical Irwindale three-wide racing with the above two and Billy Helgeson of Riverside. A spin by Jim Mardid in the #58 truck brought out a caution late in the 50-lapper and gave Mintey an opportunity to get a good run at the lead which he proceeded to take with about 11 to go.

Mintey's run in his quick Chevy pickemup truck made it two in a row on Saturday night leaving Helgeson to wonder what had happened to his set-up during the those late race yellow laps. Ron Petersen (also from Riverside) took a remarkable third place after being assessed a stop-and-go penalty (which put him to the back of the pack) for a coming together with Kyle Evans from Hanford. Petersen retained his divisional points lead at 370 with Holeman, Helgeson, and Mintey all in a neat little pack right behind at 346, 286, and 280).

In the West Coast Pro Trucks, Aaron Staudinger ran a textbook race which surely had to be far harder than it looked! The young hotshoe from Stephenson Ranch seemed to have the competition well in hand with his clean running Pick Your Part Chevy.

A green-white-checkered finish notwithstanding Staudinger was evidently able to simply pull away from the pack at will. In his post race interview he indicted that his setup was near perfect to which second and third place finishers Chris Johnson (Claremont) and Sean Bennett (Crestline) will attest. With two wins and a second place (out of the first three races!) Staudinger leads the series points battle over the tied-for-second-place Jeff Williams from Westlake and Dave Lyon from Simi Valley by18 points (148 to 130).

What looked to be one of the most exciting Super Late Model finishes ever at the Speedway was spoiled by a three-car shamozzel* that involved three lappers (who shall remain nameless) and produced yet another green-white-you-know what for the win. Right before the above three cars crunched each other out for something like 20th place, Russell White's White Motor Sports/BSB Medical Services Monte Carlo and Tony Bruncati's Sunrise Ford Taurus had been in an utterly sensational dogfight for the lead.

It was lap after lap of White just barely in front with T. Bruncati dancing in his mirrors and younger bro James (ditto on the sponsor -- Sunrise Ford) hovering about three feet behind the both of them and looking for the op to ( -- What? -- would he have happily blown on by both of them if they slipped together? -- Do cats like codfish?)

Oh yeah, the potential photo finish had everyone in the stadium standing and screaming with their eyes riveted on the lead three -- But it was not to be. In the end the G-W-C finish was surely more satisfying than that "under the yellow" stuff, but everyone in the stands and those listening at home on KTIE590AM felt more than a little bit shorted by the finish.

White was (very) happy, and the Flying Bruncati Brothers had another good 2-3 finish (same as last week) but every one of that threesome knows that HE actually, really, positively, with out the smallest shadow of a doubt had had a legitimate shot on Saturday night.

Pursley leads the annual points with 446. Brandon Loverock who finished sixth is second in the season-long tally with 414, and White looks more and more like a "contenda" with a solid 392 in after the first 10 races of the 18-race series. Super Late Model racing again lived up to its billing at Irwindale Speedway where three-wide-and-on-your-feet racing always is the name of the game.

*rhymes with "bonehead" and means roughly the same thing.
