Congressman David Dreier set to drive pace car at Irwindale Speedway on Saturday night Oct. 26.

Irwindale, Calif. - - Congressman David Dreier (aka "Speed Racer") will be on hand to drive the Irwindale Speedway's Advantage Ford pace car on Saturday night, "He just recently took a NASCAR stock car racing class at our on-site driving school, so we know that he'll be a good pace car driver for us," said Irwindale Director of Competition Chris Morgan.

Dreier did very well during his school sessions that he attended about two months ago on the Irwindale banked half mile. Driving one of the Performance Race Training Center's Chevy-powered stockers he worked his way up to some very respectable lap times. "The congressman was a good listener, and did the right thing by 'creeping up' on the speed, going faster each time that he went back out," said school instructor Chris Oddo. "David drove like a real pro, turning in quicker and quicker lap times as he became more familiar with the car and the track." Oddo related. "He was a great student! I'd give him an 'A'."

The Saturday night event at Irwindale will be the final NASCAR race for the 2002 season and will feature the longest Jani-King Super Late Model events ever staged at Irwindale Speedway, the "Advantage Ford 200". Two divisions of racing trucks (the West Coast Pro Trucks and the Ultra Wheels Super Trucks), and the hot little 4-bangers of the MSRA Pro4 division will more than fill out the evening's racing activities.

All eight of Irwindale's 2002 track champions will be on hand on Saturday night to be honored by the fans during pre-race ceremonies, after that each champion and their guest(s) will be escorted to one of Irwindale's 12 suites for a night of race watching in good style.

David Dreier (R-26th) has served the region where the Speedway is located for over two decades and is the youngest chairman ever to head the influential House Rules Committee. The very popular Congressman's new offices are located in nearby Glendora.

On Saturday night Dreier will lead the Irwindale fans in the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance and then flag off the first heat race before assuming his duties as official pace car driver for the first main event of the evening.
